2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Overview
The storied Ford Mustang needs no introduction. Across five decades, this sporty coupe and convertible has put smiles on more faces than most other models before or since. And now, for the first time in its 55-year tenure, Ford expands the Mustang lineup and does so in a big way. Enter the all-new, all-electric 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E.
From the outside, the Mustang Mach-E apes the shape of its coupe counterpart, with the same long hood, flowing roofline, upswept side windows, tri-element exterior lights, and hexagonal grille. Naturally, the iconic Mustang logo appears in multiple places. But that’s where the exterior design similarities end. For one thing, the Mach-E is a crossover, one with four doors. Those doors come without door handles and are opened with exterior-mounted buttons that pop them open.
Inside, the Mustang Mach-E makes a clean break from the Mustang coupe with a giant 15.5-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment system. But, unlike the recent Tesla Model 3, the Mustang Mach-E retains a separate instrument cluster in the form of a smaller 10.2-inch LCD. The cabin has room for five adults and 29 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which expands to 59.6 cubic feet with the rear seats down. The Mach-E also features a bonus 4.8 cubic feet in a drainable front storage trunk.
The big talking point here is the Mustang Mach-E’s electric drivetrain, which comes in standard and extended-range variants. Mustang fans will be pleased to note that the thriftiest model has rear-wheel drive (RWD) with a single electric motor and targets 300 miles of range between recharges. But you can opt for a more capable version that gives up some range for the assuredness of dual motors and performance all-wheel drive (AWD). In its most powerful specification, the Mustang Mach-E targets 332 horsepower, 417 pound-feet of torque, and a 0-to-60 time of around 3.5 seconds. Either version comes with three unique driving modes: Whisper, Engage, and Unbridled. That said, the Mustang Mach-E isn’t just about going fast; a magnetic-ride suspension and Brembo brake calipers are among the options. As of this writing, we don't have specifics around the battery sizes and charging times.
The Mustang Mach-E comes in Select, Premium, California RT.1 Edition, GT, and GT Performance trims. Even the base Select trim includes 18-inch wheels, phone-as-a-key functionality, navigation, LED lights, and sequential rear turn signals. Other trims tack on larger wheels, a panoramic fixed-glass sunroof, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, memory settings, a Bang & Olufsen 10-speaker sound system, and a hands-free liftgate. There’s also a special limited-production First Edition trim, which gets most of the Mustang Mach-E’s optional features, red brake calipers, and “First Edition” door scuff plates.
Of course, Ford feels a responsibility to safety with the Mustang Mach-E, and that comes by way of standard Ford Co-Pilot360 and Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 packages. Those include forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, a reversing camera, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, automatic rear braking, post-collision braking, reversing sensors, adaptive cruise control, and evasive steering assist.
