2021 Chevrolet Suburban Overview

The name “Suburban” instantly brings the Chevrolet brand to mind, and this large SUV gets a full redesign, complete with a new platform, for the 2021 model year. The Suburban and its sibling, the Chevy Tahoe, consistently claim a key piece of market share alongside other large SUVs like the similar GMC Yukon, Toyota Sequoia, and Ford Expedition.

The Suburban’s truck-like design is still its signature, and this year it's bigger and more expansive than ever. Despite longer proportions, large windows and an available panoramic sunroof keep things bright and fresh inside. LED lighting comes standard front and back, and active front grille shutters improve aerodynamics. Base LS and LT trims get 18-inch wheels, with 20-inch designs standard on Premier and Z71 trims, moving up to 22-inch wheels on RST and High Country versions. Premier and High Country trims also get a dual exhaust. Three new colors join the palette—Empire Beige Metallic, Cherry Bomb Tintcoat, and Darkmoon Blue Metallic—for a total of nine.

The Suburban’s base powertrain, a 5.3-liter V8 rated for 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, carries over, along with the optional 6.2-liter V8, making 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. A Duramax inline-six turbodiesel engine is also available, rated for 277 hp and 460 lb-ft. A new 10-speed automatic transmission is standard across the lineup, and a new available adaptive air suspension enhances ride quality and capability. Fuel-economy figures will be available closer to launch.

With only a 1 percent increase in overall length, the 2021 Suburban achieves a 19 percent boost in maximum cargo capacity and more legroom in the second and third rows. A second-row sliding seat is newly available. For trim levels, the base LS and LT versions keep things simple. Four additional trim levels offer personality as well as features, such as the RST, which features truck-like exterior styling and exclusive upholstery. Off-road enthusiasts should choose the Z71, which offers all-terrain upgrades. The Premier trim offers more upscale interior accommodations, like a heated steering wheel and heated and ventilated front seats. And the luxurious High Country trim level comes standard with the larger V8 engine and more tech features.

Infotainment features include a 10-inch color touchscreen and a 4.2-inch information display. An 8-inch configurable information display is available. Standard features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. Wireless device charging is standard on all but the base LS, and the Premier trim level adds navigation and a 10-speaker Bose audio system. A 15-inch head-up display is available on Premier and standard on High Country models. A second- and third-row entertainment system with dual 12.6-inch touchscreens is available.

Standard safety features are numerous and include automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, front pedestrian braking, rear park assist, an HD reversing camera, and hitch guidance for safer trailering. Options will include an HD surround camera system, lane-change alert, lane-keep assist, rear-pedestrian alert, and front and rear park assist. For safer towing and hauling, the Suburban features an industry-first trailering label, located inside the driver’s door, to help drivers understand their vehicle’s towing requirements and capabilities.

The redesigned Chevy Suburban, which will go on sale in mid-2020, brings many welcome modern touches to the classic SUV. It will be built in Arlington, Texas, alongside its sibling, the Chevy Tahoe.
