2020 Volvo XC40 Overview
If you’re looking for something different in the subcompact crossover segment, the Volvo XC40 may be for you. Introduced for 2019, this vehicle takes on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, the Audi Q3, and the BMW X1. For 2020, the XC40 carries over mostly unchanged.
The XC40’s sporty stance, bold grille, and bright lighting demand attention. Volvo maintains its usual neutral color palette, but you can add a contrasting roof for added flair.
The XC40 offers two engine choices. The T4, a front-wheel-drive (FWD) turbocharged 4-cylinder, makes 187 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. The T5, also a turbocharged 4-cylinder, makes 248 hp and 258 lb-ft and gets all-wheel drive (AWD). Both feature an 8-speed automatic transmission. The T4, the more efficient of the two, checks in at 23 mpg city, 33 highway, and 27 combined.
The XC40’s interior design easily adapts for sport or luxury. The XC40 in the base Momentum trim comes standard fitted with leather upholstery and an air filtration system. The R-Design adds dual-zone automatic climate control, a power passenger seat, a refrigerated glove box, and a hands-free power tailgate. Other available features include heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. Look to the top-tier Inscription trim for wood interior, a crystal shift knob, and a panoramic moonroof.
The XC40’s infotainment system features a 9-inch touchscreen, an 8-speaker audio system, satellite radio, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. You can also add a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, navigation, and wireless-device charging.
Though the XC40 has not been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it features a reversing camera, lane-keep assist, oncoming lane mitigation, road-departure mitigation, automatic emergency braking, rear-collision warning, traffic-sign recognition, and driver-drowsiness monitoring. Options include a surround-view camera system, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, front and rear parking sensors, park assist, and Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system.
As the Volvo XC40 enters its second year, it’s almost certain to capture the attention of newcomers in this segment.
