The Mazda CX-9 is a three-row crossover in the same category as the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and the new Kia Telluride. For 2020, it gets some minor updates.
Previously, all CX-9s were 7-seaters, with three seats in the second row and two in the third row. This year, Mazda introduces a captain’s chair package for the second row, which reduces overall seating to 6. You can pair the captain’s chairs with or without a center console.
The CX-9’s engine carries over from last year. It’s a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder capable of 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on 93-octane fuel, which is 10 more lb-ft than last year's version offered. While the engine is tuned for premium fuel, you can opt for regular fuel and a slight power deficit. A 6-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels, but all-wheel drive (AWD) is an option. With regular fuel, the CX-9 is rated for 22 mpg city, 28 highway, and 24 combined with front-wheel drive (FWD), and 20, 26, and 23 with AWD.
The CX-9 comes in Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature trims. The Sport comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, heated front seats, cloth upholstery, heated outside mirrors, automatic headlights, a power driver’s seat, tri-zone automatic climate control, keyless start, and a 7-inch infotainment system. Other trims add Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, leather upholstery, a power liftgate, a 9-inch infotainment system, navigation, a Bose 12-speaker audio system, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, auto-folding side mirrors, and a heated steering wheel.
The Mazda i-Activsense safety suite is newly standard on the CX-9. It bundles a reversing camera, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Options consist of a heads-up display, parking sensors, and traffic-sign recognition. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the CX-9 top marks in its most recent evaluation.
What owners say
"Overall, drivers are highly impressed with the 2020 Mazda CX-9, praising its safety features, comfortable ride, and spacious interior. Many appreciate the vehicle's performance and luxury feel, especially for a mid-size SUV. However, some noted that they wished the SUV was a bit larger to enhance space further."
I love this car! The ventilated seats, heads up display, and beautiful interior make this car top tier luxury!
June 1, 2024Spacious, safety features are superior! The ride is very smooth. I would recommend this car to anyone with a big family. The second and 3rd row seats are adjustable and allow a good amount of space! The gas mileage isn’t bad compared to other large suvs! Did great with state to state travel !
December 5, 2021I am a previous owner of a Mazda CX-9 grand touring 2010 so I am already a fan of Mazda. Mazda is a good reliable model and repairs are reasonable. I am in love with the technology upgrades which help with a safer drive and seamless integration with my phone. I like the capability to have more seat adjustments for comfort. The space appears to be similar to previous CX-9. Love the sexy and sleek body design making it stand out from other mid-size SUVs. You get more for your money compared to other vehicles in similar category. I received an exceptional deal on CarGuru. Very pleased.

October 24, 2021The Mazda CX-9 offers the quality, comfort and features that I wanted at a much lower price than the competing models like the Toyota Highlander. Its very enjoyable to drive and great quality!
March 2, 2023Great SUV, fun to drive, quite, handles extremely Well. We got it for my wife, who does not care about things, and certainly not cars, but she said she loves driving it. That is a big statement from her. We got the touring trim, which has everything we could have wanted, and is very well put together. Everywhere you touch is nice and pleasing to feel. I wish the car was a couple of inches wider and longer though.
November 28, 2021This was one of the first near luxury 7 passenger SUVs. I’ve owned four of them because they are just that good! Good ride, great response, lots of creature features and safety. Wife took a head on collision in our 2014 model that completely protected the passenger compartment. High reliability and low maintenance.
August 18, 2020I love all the safety features that are on this vehicle. Plus the turbo makes it fun to drive.
February 10, 2023I love the safety features in this model. I currently struggle with lost of part of my peripheral vision and I love how it has a head up display and lane departure warning. I feel safe in this vehicle
January 27, 2023Great features for the price. Surprised this is not leading in sales in the US.
April 25, 2021For the price I paid it is the best bang for my buck SUV I could find.
