2019 GMC Sierra 3500HD Overview
The GMC Sierra 3500HD one-ton truck sits at the top of the brand’s consumer line. The Sierra 1500 was given a full redesign for 2019, so the 3500HD should soon follow, but this year, it carries along unchanged. Like before, GMC offers it in a single crew cab style, with either 6.5 or 8-foot boxes, and single or dual rear wheels.
The standard powertrain for the Sierra 3500HD is a 6.0-liter V8 making 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired up with a heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmission and either rear-wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD). An automatic locking rear differential comes standard. It can tow up to 14,100 lbs.
Drivers with more demanding needs will want to opt for the 6.6-liter turbocharged V8 diesel engine, which makes 445 hp and an insane 910 lb-ft of torque. You’ll be able to pick the diesel model out of a crowd by the large hood scoop, which draws cool air into the engine. The diesel can also be equipped with RWD or 4WD. In its most powerful configuration, it can handle towing 20,000 lbs.
The trim ladder is unchanged, so the 2019 Sierra 3500HD comes in the same Sierra, SLE, SLT and Denali grades. The Sierra trim gets standard trailering mirrors, rear bumper steps, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth, and USB jacks.
The SLE makes the trailering mirrors power adjustable and comes with an electronic transfer case for 4WD models, keyless entry with remote locking tailgate, a larger 8-inch infotainment system, a 4.2-inch color instrument cluster LCD, and LED cargo lighting.
The SLT trim comes with leather upholstery, heated outside seats, remote start, power-adjustable pedals, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 110-volt power outlet. Buyers can also add an All Terrain HD off-road package with a body-colored grille, black mirror caps, a black front skid plate, black assist steps, 18-inch chrome aluminum wheels shod in all-terrain tires, a spray-in bedliner, and off-road suspension.
Lastly, the Denali grade features unique chrome exterior appointments, body-colored front and rear bumpers, and the “Denali” mesh grille. Other standard items include nicer perforated leather seats, wireless phone charging, an 8-inch instrument panel LCD, and heated and cooled 12-way power front bucket seats.
GMC has bestowed the Sierra 3500HD with standard stability control and trailer sway assist. A dealer-installed Trailering Camera System is available; this includes extra cameras on the exterior mirrors and trailer, six separate vantage points, and blind-spot assistance. Buyers can even add a Snow Plow Prep Package, which comes with a power feed for backup and roof emergency lights, an uprated 220-amp alternator, a forward light wiring harness, provisions for a roof-mounted beacon, underbody shields, and upgraded front springs.
For the ultimate class of pickup trucks, the GMC Sierra 3500HD is a solid and competitive truck. Still, look for a redesigned model before too long, to take things to an even greater level.
