The 2011 Hyundai Accent GL is the trim name of the modern major budget ride. The Accent, whose base trim was formerly known as Blue, now drives under a new name for 2011: the GL. The GL continues to offer buyers a commuter car with the most basic of features and not much in the way of available options. However, the tradeoff is an MSRP under $10,000, which will definitely not leave consumers feeling blue.
The interior of the three-door hatchback (no five-door is available for any of the hatchback trims) is surprisingly spacious. Hyundai is quick to point out that the Accent's 108.1 cubic feet of total interior volume is class-leading, roomier than the Honda Civic Coupe. The Accent hatchback’s cargo space measures 15.9 cubic feet, also larger than the Toyota Yaris three-door's. Additionally, Hyundai notes that front passengers have class-leading legroom and rear passengers have a class-leading 53.1 inches of shoulder room. Most agree that the front feels comfortable and spacious, with a high seat position for an optimal view. The rear seat (which folds in a 60/40 split for additional cargo space) is a different story, however, with legroom that can feel cramped, depending on how far back the driver’s seat is. The sloped roofline also impacts headroom, making entering and exiting the hatchback difficult.
Features inside the GL are bare bones, with a heater, power steering, and six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat. And little can be added. In fact, packages and accessories are limited to air conditioning, a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, an iPod/MP3 holder and aesthetic details, including carpeted floormats, mudguards, aluminum door sills and an alloy fuel door. Yep, this means no stereo, although the GL does come equipped with an audio prep package (four speakers and a roof-mounted AM/FM antenna) to allow for after-market stereo installation. Outside, the GL includes a standard rear spoiler and rear defroster, but no rear windshield wiper, limiting visibility in bad weather.
Despite the minimalist approach to interior and exterior features, the Accent GL does use the same engine as the higher end trims (both hatchback and sedan). The 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine with CVVT is matched with a 5-speed manual transmission with tachometer and EcoShift indicator to help maximize fuel-efficient driving. No automatic transmission is available for the base. The front-wheel-drive subcompact delivers 110 hp at 6,000 rpm and 106 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm with impressive fuel economy numbers: 28 mpg city/34 highway. The GL's power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering plus MacPherson front struts with stabilizer bar and coupled torsion beam rear suspension match the systems in the higher-end GS and GLS trims. The suspension in the GL, however, is paired with skinny, 14-inch tires that lack the grip and cornering ability of the larger tires found, for example, on the SE trim, resulting in noticeable lean in the corners and even some tire squeal.
Safety in the GL matches the other trims for the 2011 Accent. Six airbags and a front occupant classification system, as well as a tire pressure monitoring system, are standard. While antilock brakes are standard for the SE trim and optional in the GS hatchback, they are not even an option for the GL. Potential buyers should note that the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet rated the Hyundai Accent with its new 2011 standards. However, the NHTSA gave mixed reviews to the 2010 Accent hatchback, with five stars for front crash tests (both passenger and driver side), and four stars for side impact crashes and rollovers (12.7% chance of a rollover). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the 2006-2011 Accent as Acceptable (its second highest rating) for front, rollover and rear crash tests, but failed the car for side impact tests, with its lowest Poor rating.
The GL is about as stripped down as a car can get. But if you’re in the market for a surprisingly roomy subcompact hatchback with an extremely affordable MSRP, great gas mileage and six standard airbags, then the 2011 Hyundai Accent GL may be for you. However, buyers should beware that adding a stereo, or even air conditioning, will cost you, and by the time you’re done adding features, the price may not be as affordable as it first appeared.

The 2011 Hyundai Accent GS is one step up in trim level from the base GL, but a giant step it is. Although the GS costs thousands more than the base GL, it also provides more standard features and even a package of options not available with the entry-level version of the three-door, front-wheel-drive hatchback.
Outside, the GS matches the GL with integrated rear spoiler, body-colored grille, dual manual outside mirrors and skinny, 14-inch tires that, when paired with the coupled torsion beam rear suspension (front MacPherson struts with stabilizer bar), can cause body lean in the corners and even some tire squeal. The GS trim, however, does add a rear window washer with wiper to add visibility.
Under the hood, the GS matches the engine found in both higher and lower trim levels. The 1.6-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder with CVVT produces some impressive fuel economy estimates: 27 mpg city/36 highway with the standard 4-speed automatic transmission and 28/34 with the available 5-speed manual, making this one of the Accent’s selling features. The engine’s power, however, while adequate for commuting purposes, is not designed for high-performance driving, with 110 hp at 6,000 rpm and 106 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. Two transmissions are available: a standard 4-speed automatic or an optional 5-speed manual, both with an EcoShift indicator to promote fuel-efficient driving. Most agree that drivers will get more pep from the manual transmission than from the automatic.
Inside, the GS adds a number of standard features to the GL’s bare-bones budget ride. Air conditioning is now standard, as are a tilt steering wheel, maplights, a sunglasses holder and, new for this year, a standard 172-watt AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers. A USB port and auxiliary audio jack are also standard features.
As with the base GL, most seem pleasantly surprised by the interior space of the GS hatchback. The GS seats 5 with cloth seats. The ride up front is typically described as unexpectedly spacious, with a front seat height that offers a panoramic view. The rear, however, may be tighter for adults, particularly if the driver or front passenger moves a seat back, reducing rear legroom. Additionally, the rear seats, which fold in a 60/40 split to increase rear cargo space, are difficult to get in and out of, given the sloping roofline of the hatchback.
Unlike the base GL, the GS offers an entire package of options. The Premium Package, while increasing price, adds antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, power windows and locks (with remote keyless entry), power exterior mirrors and two lighted interior vanity mirrors. A Bluetooth hands-free phone system, iPod/MP3 holder, carpeted floormats, mudguards, aluminum door sills and an alloy fuel door are among the GS's stand-alone add-ons. Other features, however, such as cruise control, or the traction or stability control systems, are notable by their absence.
Standard safety features in the 2011 Hyundai Accent center around the six airbags found in all trim levels. These include front row, side impact airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags and front airbags with an occupant classification system. A tire pressure monitoring system also comes standard. However, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have both given the Accent hatchback a mixed result for crash tests. The NHTSA (assessing the 2010 Accent) gave the hatchback 5 out of 5 stars for front crashes, but only 4 out of 5 stars for side crashes and rollovers. The IIHS gave a rating of Acceptable (one lower than its highest Good score) for front collisions and rollovers, but a Poor (its lowest rating) for front side impact crashes.
The 2011 Hyundai Accent GS continues to offer a small, commuter-minded car. With six standard airbags, a surprisingly spacious interior that doesn’t feel cheap, comfortable front seats and good fuel economy at a reasonable starting sticker price, the midrange Accent three-door now even offers a standard stereo. Although additional convenience and safety features can be added to the GS, they come at a price, which, combined with mixed safety scores, may lead buyers to check out the competition.

The GLS trim is the only sedan option for the 2011 Hyundai Accent. And although the GLS may offer a trunk and two additional doors, the sedan offers few additional advantages over its slightly more stylish hatchback brethren.
The GLS engine matches the one powering the hatchbacks: a 1.6-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder with CVVT, which helped to gain the Accent its Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) certification. The powertrain is covered by what Hyundai calls “America’s Best Warranty,” with a 10-year/100,000-mile limited warranty, as well as five years (unlimited mileage) of 24-hour roadside assistance. The front-wheel-drive GLS comes with a standard 5-speed manual transmission with an EcoShift indicator to encourage fuel-efficient driving. A 4-speed automatic is an available option, but the power and acceleration in the automatic are noticeably less zippy. Despite this, the GLS is often mentioned in the “good commuter car” category, and its fuel economy estimates make it good for the wallet as well (28 mpg city/34 highway with the manual transmission and 27/36 for the automatic). These high numbers are an added bonus given the small size (11.9 gallons) of the tank.
Outside, the GLS rides on 14-inch tires that don’t offer much road-hugging reassurance, with body lean and tire squeal during quick cornering. The front MacPherson strut with stabilizer bar and rear coupled torsion beam suspension offer a soft ride, with reviews noting bouncing over bumps and one owner noting that the car bottomed out when driving with four adults. The GLS distinguishes itself from other Accent trims, however, with an attempt at style: it adds a black grille with chrome accents to the front (the hatchbacks come with a bodycolor grille), as well as tinted glass and a windshield shade band, similar to standard features found on the SE.
Inside, the Accent GLS offers a comfortable ride up front, with a high seating position for the cloth-covered seats. The driver’s seat comes with 6-way adjustment, including dual height adjustment, front sliding and reclining. The rear bench seat includes a rear center armrest with cupholders. Despite Hyundai’s claims that the interior space surpasses competitors', legroom in the rear of the GLS may be tight if the driver’s seat has to be pushed back too far. Surprisingly, the sedan delivers slightly less cargo space than the hatchback trims (12.4 cubic feet vs. 15.9 cubic feet) although the rear seats do fold in a 60/40 split for additional storage.
The no-frills interior includes standard air conditioning and heat with rear seat heater ducts. Power steering is standard, but a tilt adjustment is available only as part of the GLS Premium Package of options. Storage includes the glove compartment, front and rear bottle holders, front and rear door pocket storage compartments and a passenger side front seatback pocket. The GLS provides a standard stereo, with an Autonet AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers, a USB port and auxiliary audio jack. Bluetooth hands-free phone can be added as an accessory. The GLS can be further enhanced, however, with the Premium Package of extras, which includes power windows, power locks, power exterior mirrors, cruise control and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.
Safety features in the GLS include six standard airbags (front advance airbags with an occupant classification system, front side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags for the front and rear passengers). Antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution are available as part of the Premium Package of options. The GLS is the sole trim to have been assessed using the new National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) standards. In a rollover test for 2011, the GLS rated four (out of five) stars, with a 12.4% chance of a rollover. While front and side crash tests had not been conducted with 2011 standards, the NHTSA scores for 2010 show a perfect score for frontal crashes, but four stars for driver's-side front crash, and only three stars for passenger rear seat side crashes. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) scored the Accent Acceptable (one level lower than its highest Good rating) for front, rollover and rear crashes. However, the IIHS gave its lowest score, Poor, to the Accent for side crashes.
The 2011 Hyundai Accent GLS is not designed to provide a uniquely styled or performance-oriented sedan. It does, however, offer commuters a reasonably priced mode of transportation with options to up its safety and convenience, while offering fuel economy numbers designed to keep the wallet happy.

The SE represents the top-of-the-line hatchback trim for the 2011 Hyundai Accent. This year, according to Hyundai, in order to lower the price, the sporty version of the three-door hatchback no longer includes the power sunroof as a standard feature. Even with this modification, the MSRP for the SE tops the Accent price chart with $15,345 for the standard 5-speed manual transmission (which comes with a B&M Racing Sport Shifter) or $16,145 for the available 4-speed automatic. The cost includes all of the features found in the midrange GS trim with its Premium Package of options, plus some extras.
The SE runs on the same engine as the other Accent trims, a 1.6-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder with CVVT, producing 110 hp at 6,000 rpm and 106 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. Fuel economy remains a selling feature of the Accent, with 28 mpg city/34 highway for the standard 5-speed manual and 27/36 for the available 4-speed automatic transmission. The suspension in the SE has been tuned for sportier driving, with stiffer front and rear spring rates, a larger stabilizer bar, and 16-inch tires for greater roll control. It does not, however, completely eliminate the body lean more noticeable in the GL and GS, with their smaller tires and standard suspension.
Outside, the SE features an integrated rear spoiler, dual power outside mirrors and standard rear window wiper and washer. Mud guards, an alloy fuel door and aluminum door sills are available as available standalone accessories. In addition, the SE distinguishes itself from the other two hatchback trims with standard foglights, tinted glass and a windshield shade band.
Inside, the SE includes a tilt-adjustable, leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted cruise and audio controls. The stereo system matches the other trims’, with a 172-watt AM/FM/XM/CD player with six speakers, a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack, but the SE also provides a 3-month subscription to XM satellite radio. A hands-free Bluetooth phone system is available. Metallic accents adorn the interior, with easy-to-read gauges, including an EcoShift indicator for fuel-efficient driving and easy-to-use controls. Other interior features include standard power windows and locks (with remote keyless entry), air conditioning and cruise control. Although the SE seats five, the front seat ride is described as more comfortable than the rear, with 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, including dual height adjustment. The rear seats (which fold in a 60/40 split) can be a little tight for adults if the front seats need to be pushed back for driver comfort. The sloping roofline can also make entry and exit difficult from the rear.
The SE is the sole Accent trim to provide standard antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution (ABS is available as an option for the GS hatchback and GLS sedan). The SE, like the other Accents, comes with a standard six airbags, including dual front airbags, driver and front passenger side-impact airbags and side air curtains for the front and rear. Despite these safety features, however, the Accent has mixed results in crash tests, with the 2010 performing better in the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s front crash tests (a perfect five stars) than in side-impact or rollover tests (four stars). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Accent an Acceptable rating (one step below its highest Good) for front crashes and rollovers, but awarded the lowest possible rating (Poor) for side impact crashes.
The SE, with its sport-tuned suspension and manual transmission, offers perhaps a bit more driving excitement than the other three-door hatchback Accents in this year’s lineup. With six airbags and excellent fuel economy, the SE may make the commute to work not only more affordable, but also more fun.
