Unlike Volvo's less-expensive XC70, this rugged crossover sees no major changes for the 2008 model year. An auto-dimming rearview mirror is now an across-the-board standard feature, and both V8 models receive some minor trim adjustments.
The XC90 has been praised since its introduction for a combination of interior luxury, seat comfort, safety systems, and its surprising fun-to-drive appeal for this type of vehicle. Notable safety features include full-length side-curtain airbags, front-seat side airbags, an anti-whiplash system, stability control, and a rollover sensor.
Despite a rather thorough overhaul for the 2007 model year, the XC90's look has lost its unique appeal, according to many expert reviewers. Neither of the XC engine options offers very strong fuel economy.
There are three trim levels for the 2008 XC90. The entry-level 3.2 is V6 powered and comes equipped with the basic luxuries, like wood interior trim, a power/memory driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a premium eight-speaker audio system with a CD/MP3 player. The V8 models gain third-row seating, leather upholstery, and a power seat for the passenger. The top-tier Sport is differentiated by unique exterior trim, a sport suspension, 19-inch wheels, and a sport steering wheel.
Buyers may choose from two XC engine options. The entry-level 3.2 houses a 3.2-liter V6, which generates 235 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. The two upper trims are powered by a 4.4-liter V8, making 311 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Both the V6 and the V8 engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. The V8 models will tow about 5,000 pounds.

What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2008 Volvo XC90 are highly satisfied with its safety, comfort, and build quality. They appreciate its spacious interior, smooth ride, and the reputation for reliability. However, some drivers mentioned concerns about fuel economy, performance, and maintenance issues like battery failures. Overall, it's seen as a dependable vehicle that offers great value for money."
This is the best car ever with headrest tv's, nav, great speakers and a kick ass engine
May 6, 2008I love everything about this car even after 14 years. It runs and drives like it just came off the lot. I sold my 17 qx60 and got this 08 volvo and I actually think I prefer it. It’s been reliable and gotten way better fuel economy than its rated for. I typically get 17-18 town and 23-26hwy when it’s only rated at 14/20.
September 30, 2022I really liked the Volvo XC90. My son's car seat fit well in the back seat without the passenger having to practically eat the dashboard. I also felt very safe in it and would love to drive one of my own.

March 9, 2008This car is good for 300,000 miles easy.Just do you oil changes.Dont drive It agreesive and it will last forvever. My wife bought hers in 2008 and has 346000 miles on it still looks brand new. Keep the leather seat conditioned with mquers leather cleaner and conditioner all in one. A fantastic car with class.
February 6, 2023The XC90 is very comfortable and safe, and has a lot of great extras like the AUX input, convertible rear storage, and a manual shifting option. The ride is very smooth and stable, with competent acceleration and handling. Mileage is decent, about 18mpg city and 22mpg highway.
July 16, 2009This is a quality 4x4 which is perfect for family, SAT NAV, black lether (which is too hot for the summer), really good aircon, perfect sound system. This car is NOT fast, but not many 4x4s are anyway. Great handling and braking. this is a 4x4 so it will always be a lot of money for a tank
September 19, 2010Just got it, but I think I love it even more than my Lexus, which is really weird. Its like it doesnt try hard to be a cool car, it is just what it is.
June 27, 2008great car, you get the SUV space and power with the feel of a small car. The tiptronic work very well and the gear changes are nice and smooth. Very safe, i spent more time than needed in the volvo safety museum, and there are more features than you actually need.
December 9, 2008We like the 6 cylinder wouldn’t trade it but sure would like a newer one and keep this as a back up it runs great not a lot of repairs just the normal and no rust well put together
