After complaints of an underpowered engine became deafening, the 2008 Hummer H3 added a new 5.3-liter V8 to its lineup. The new H3 Alpha gets 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque, and its dimensions have been slightly revised to accommodate the larger engine from the Silverado. It also purportedly is cleaner than many pickup engines. The regular 5-cylinder, 3.5-liter engine remains, now putting out 242 hp. Both engines come with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed Hydramatic, and the Alpha has taller gears.
The 2008 H3 features 4WD with low-range gearing, 9 inches of ground clearance, and skid plates, and is designed specifically for off-roading. Traction control and rack-and-pinion steering have been revised this year, and all models come with ABS brakes, stability control, a tire monitor, and dual front airbags. Side curtain airbags have also been added in the Alpha for 2008. Base models feature a full power setup, cruise control, and CD player, and as you move up through Luxury and H3x, you add heated leather seats, power front seats, and a 6-CD changer. The H3x adds styling notes, such as a chrome fuel door and body-colored grille.
Rear seats split-fold 60/40 and fold down to open up the small cargo area to 56 cubic feet. Tie-downs are included, but a cargo cover is extra. You can also add a trailer hitch to tow up to 4,500 pounds in the regular H3 and 6,000 pounds in the Alpha V8. The rear-mounted spare tire, which hampered visibility, has been moved under the bed. Options include a sunroof and rearview camera. The extra V8 power has increased the 2008 H3's rugged off-roading performance, and the smaller overall size of the H3 somewhat improves city maneuverability, but highway driving still lacks power, and the rear seats are still cramped.

I just think the H3 Hummer combines Lucy with the option to off road with this vehicle. It’s got a very smooth ride and it’s easy to get parts and service. It’s also a beautiful SUV. It has lots of room and when you fold down the back seats you have extra cargo space. Even with the rear seats up the cargo space is very spacious. Gets actually good gas mileage. I like the engine size and when you have snow and ice it goes into 4 Wheel drive easily. It can drive right around people who are actually stuck in ice and snow. It’s great for towing also. Really bad frame and undercarriage rust. Stability and traction warning lights flashing during test drive as well as shaking and vibration in steering wheel. No Bluetooth or GPS navigation as stated or heated seats.Oct 04, 2022

The Hummer H3 is a solid and comfortable vehicle.
The car was priced appropriately, but this particular vehicle had a mechanical problem in the front end.

The Hummer H3 is a great utilitarian vehicle with incredible style and strength. The all-time 4WD handles beautifully on and off the road. You sit up high on the road and have good visibility. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for something in its class. I have driven jeeps and loved them too, but compared to the sturdiness that the H3 had and the luxurious feel, I didn't like them near as much. The V8 alpha version is definitely worth the extra money as the v6 only gives 239 hp and its curb weight is some monstrous number. We took this car camping a few times and my favorite part of the H3 is that it is unstoppable in the dirt. Off-roading in it was a blast!Oct 18, 2012

Great truck for the weekend in the back country. There is the cold air intake and throttle body spacer that can be installed that can give you 2-4 more miles to the gallon.
I recommend to not install a roof cargo basket if you dont need it. The basket decreases your MPG.Dec 17, 2011

about 14mpg...I can count on it and it is safe to price, love the comfort. of
the leather and performance. Its built...I have only 24k miles and so far

I like the color (bright orange) very much and the fact that it is a 5 speed. It needed the passenger seat repaired when purchased. The Hummer handles very well. Overall, it is a comfortable, fun vehicle to drive. Gas mileage is around 16 mpg and 14 around town Jun 01, 2010

The H3 Alpha is just a fun vehicle to drive, the turning radius is amazing. Excellent acceleration and a lot of power. This vehicle is a gas hog about 12.5 miles a gallon. Comfortable vehicle to drive or ride. Feels safe and sturdy.Jul 25, 2009

This is a awesome suv. Very stable, safe and easy to drive. The draw back to this vehicle is the uninformed general public. If they understood the vehicle and its use and ability they would be better off. Better fuel economy than a Jeep grand cherokee as well as better re sale value and safer.May 22, 2009

I like the size. I do not like the fact that it is horribly underpowered. But I will not be getting any speeding tickets as a result. Need help, want larger wheels and tires on my H3
Hi, Ive been reading some posts about increasing the size of wheels and tires for a stock H3 and have a few questions. In the posts I have read that I can increase the size of the wheel/tire package up to 2-3 inches without need for a lift kit, larger breaks or any retuning. If I increase the size of my wheel from 16" to 18", I would need to find a tire with a 2" smaller side wall to keep the same diameter, is that how it works??? I want to keep the off road performance of my truck and am looking at nitto or alike pseudo knobby tires. Does anyone have any experience in sizing the tires for an already increased rim size of 18" to fit in a stock H3?
