About 2006 Hummer H3
Trying to make a fuel-efficient Hummer is a bit like trying to make tasty non-fat ice cream. It really can't be done. So even though the brand new 2006 Hummer H3 is 17 inches smaller than the H2 and built on a Chevy Colorado truck platform in an effort to improve both handling and fuel economy, the mid-size SUV succeeds in the former and expectedly fails in the latter. MPG ranges around 15/19. But that's not why people buy Hummers, and the 2006 H3 is aimed at those who want the menacing style and status symbol, but prefer a more manageable and smaller SUV-type vehicle. Equipped with full-time AWD and low-range gearing, the H3 excels at off-road performance, with 9 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, low-range gearing, and skid plates. An Off-Road package adds a stronger suspension, a locking rear differential, and a low transfer case gearing. Engine power comes from a 3.5-liter, 220-hp I5 with either a 5-speed manual or weak 4-speed automatic, and most owners agree it's not quite enough for responsive acceleration or uphill climbs, as the 2006 H3 weighs over 3000 pounds. Style-wise, it mimics the H2 and is hard to distinguish the two on the road. The H3 seats four in two rows and comes standard with power features, ABS brakes, dual front airbags, cruise control, and a CD player. Options add leather seats, power seats, and a sunroof. The somewhat cramped rear seats split-fold 60/40 to expand the 29 cubic foot cargo space to 56 cubic feet. The seats do not fold flat, to the disappointment of some drivers, but the rear door does open sideways for easy access. Upsides for the H3 include a smooth ride, a feeling of safety, overall style, and unbeatable off-road capability. Drivers dislike the engine power, access to the rear seats, the small cargo area and lack of storage compartments, and complain that the front armrest is too far back.
