With 20 more inches in the wheelbase (155 inches), the 2008 GMC Savana Cargo 2500 Extended can carry a total of 317 cubic feet -- 50 more than in the 135-inch wheelbase version. However, it also enlarges the turning radius by seven inches to 54 inches. Powered by a 4.8-liter, 279-hp V8 with a 4-speed automatic, the rear-wheel drive van averages 15/20 mpg and can tow up to 10,000 pounds with the available trailer hitch. Other available V8s are the 6.0 turbodiesel, with 250-hp and 460 ft-lbs of torque, and the 6.6, 323-hp with 373 ft-lbs of torque.
The utility van seats two, with two doors and rear barn doors to the cargo area. A swing-out 60/40 hinged passenger door is standard, but can be supplemented by a driver's swing-out door or replaced with a sliding door. The cargo area features a rubber mat and light. Power steering, air conditioning, a radio, intermittent wipers, a tachometer, security system, two front power outlets, and a revised trip computer are all standard on the 2008 Savana Cargo 2500 Extended. A tire monitor is new this year, joining 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, dual front airbags with passenger deactivation, 16-inch wheels, automatic headlights, dual rearview mirrors, and daytime running lights. Together, these safety features earn the van five stars in frontal impact tests. Side head airbags, mirrors with turn signals, a heavy duty locking rear differential, and roof lights are available.
More comfort options come in the form of full power features, remote entry, a 6-way power driver's seat, cruise control, tilt steering, rear climate control, heated mirrors, a compass, and a choice of CD player or various CD changers. Upgraded cloth can replace the vinyl upholstery. On the exterior, chrome bumpers and a grille are optional, as are splash guards, and tinted glass. Another nice add-on is a breakdown warning kit with reflectors.
