To say there's a lot of anticipation for Chrysler's new retro Dodge Challenger would be a bit of an understatement. You can almost see the puddles of man-drool collecting in the corners of Internet chat forums. Rumors have it that Dodge will very likely release its 1970s-inspired Challenger sometime in 2008, and early buzz and photos show that Dodge has done everything right. This car might actually make it cool to own a Dodge again. The only colors available for the 2008 model year will be black, silver, and Challenger Orange (see pictures).
After seeing the success Ford had with its redesigned Mustang, Chrysler went to work on designing a concept car based on its original Challenger. This concept car first appeared at the 2006 International Auto Show. Built on the same platform as the Dodge Charger, but two inches shorter, four inches wider, and sitting lower to the ground, the Challenger concept car features a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Like its 1970s inspiration, it has 425 horsepower, but it's even quicker off the line, with a claimed 0-to-60 time of 4.5 seconds and a max speed of 174 mph. It's likely the 6.1 Hemi will only be an option on the 2008 Challenger, and some of us will just have to settle for the mere standard 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine.
Early pictures reveal horizontal taillights and four round headlights, with race-car striping on the hood. The word "cool" doesn't do it enough justice. If you need any more convincing, go out and rent a copy of "Vanishing Point" or "Gone in 60 Seconds," or check out old "Mannix" reruns on Nick at Night and get ready to welcome back the Dodge Challenger. Now, excuse me while I grab a towel to wipe the drool off my computer screen.

What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2008 Dodge Challenger express a strong affection for its classic muscle car look, impressive performance, and comfortable interior. Many drivers appreciate the powerful acceleration and the nostalgic appeal reminiscent of the original Challengers. However, some noted that this model doesn’t fully capture the essence of the classic versions. A common point of criticism is the exhaust note, which several drivers feel should be louder to match the car's sporty character."
The Tale of the Tape: -Price range: $34,000 - $43,000 - Hemi V-8 engine - Available in a 5-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission. - 0-60 mph: 4.5-5.0 seconds - Base engine: 5.7 L/340-hp - Optional engines: 6.1 L/425-hp
February 22, 2008My 2008 Challenger SRT is the first edition year and numbered (873 of 6400). The car is magnificent and a real head turner. With a 6.1L Hemi - just hang on for the ride! This is a BIG sports car. Bigger than the Camaro and Mustang, adults can actually sit with some level of comfort in the back seats. My SRT8 has a sunroof which we absolutely love. The interior in this version of the Challenger is meant to be retro - so - other than partial leather seats which are extremely comfortable, the interior wont blow you away. Remember - in 08 a retro (circa 1970) look was the "in" thing. Love my Challenger!
April 14, 2015Vintage looks. Very Fast. Sounds great. Everyone loves it. People gather round to check it out where ever I park it. Solid ride. Feels heavy. A little bit stiff but not bad for a muscle car. Seats are very comfortable. Vision while backing up is somewhat limited. Nice to open hood and see a Hemi engine under there.

November 10, 2008This car is amazing. 425hp is plenty to move this solid car down the road at whatever speed you want. And the Matching torque gives you plenty of acceleration from any speed. Exterior styling cant be beat by any competitor and the interior is set up to match the outside. Gas mileage you would expect from a mid sized family car not a full sides performance car.
September 15, 2009The acceleration on this car is amazing especially for how heavy the car is. It handles great, even at high speeds and has no problems with playtime. The interior is very comfortable and classy but sporty at the same time. I love the way it sounds. It kinda purs quietly when at slow speeds but when you feed some power to it it roars.
July 9, 2008This car is the best looking of the newer cars that come from the past. This car is bad ass.
June 21, 2008preformance - acceleration, braking, handling unbelieveable. Hemi orange, grey lether interior. Here is a car where one doesnt have to take the cover off, remove the battery charger put air in the tires and sit there for a few minutes cranking the car over to get it to start. All this just to have some fun.. A new icon for a new generation. Car enthusiasts of today get a chance to see what life was like 35 yrs ago during the muscle car era.
September 27, 2008Car handles great despite what others would call a overweight beast. I enjoy the ride and comfort level this car provides, tons of leg room and comfy seats that hold you in place when you want to get a little more aggressive during rush hour.
August 14, 2014I have liked the look of the car when they brought it out, minus the rear end (tail lights and housing). When the local dealer gets one I am going to go and test run it. Will report more then.
January 21, 2008This car is amazing! The only thing i would change is the exhaust system. The exhaust isn't very loud like a hot rod should be. It has the appearance of an old car, but the luxuries of a new car. The 08 i drove was an automatic, i can't wait to drive the manual!
