Nissan’s Z car has taken significant strides in power, handling, and aesthetics with its latest incarnation, the 2009 370Z, the most powerful Z yet and the replacement for the 350Z. The two-seat, rear-wheel-drive 370Z is available in two trims, Base and Touring, and starts at $29,930.
The 370 name corresponds to its engine displacement of 3.7 liters, a system that started with the first Z, the 1969 Datsun 240-Z, and obviously indicates a larger displacement than its immediate predecessor, the 350. This V6 produces 332 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque and can take you from 0-60 in 4.7 seconds, which is about two tenths of a second faster than the 350Z. There’s also a new intake system, Nissan’s Variable Valve Event and Lift, which increases the torque curve and fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. This fourth-generation Nissan VQ engine is the same one that’s in the Infiniti G37.
The performance upgrade continues with a wheelbase that's been shortened by 3.9 inches from the 350's, a width increase of 1.1 inches, a length decrease of 2.7 inches, and a lowering of 0.6 inches. All these adjustments add up to superior handling. The car is 33 pounds heavier, but could have been much more. Nearly 200 pounds of regulatory safety features were added, but thanks to lightweight materials (aluminum doors and hatch and a carbon-fiber composite driveshaft, for example) its overall weight didn’t balloon.
The 7-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters is not your average slush-box auto transmission. But it’s the SynchroRev Match 6-speed manual that has people talking and represents a major upgrade from the 350. This new technology automatically moves the throttle to the ideal RPM during a downshift, smoothing transitions, making fast corners a breeze, and prompting some to call the 370 a sports car for beginners.
The brakes also get an upgrade with the available 14-inch front discs with 4-piston calipers and 13.8-inch rear discs with 2-piston calipers, which shorten the car's stopping distance to 159 feet. Eighteen-inch aluminum alloy wheels come standard with 225/50R18 (front) and 245/45R18 (rear) Yokohama ADVAN Sport tires.
Perhaps the 370Z's biggest negative is the standard audio system, which won’t play MP3 CDs and has muddy sound. But the available suite of cabin technology (also seen in the Nissan Maxima) is excellent and features a Bose stereo system with 9.3GB Music Box hard drive, hard-drive based navigation system with real-time traffic advisories, and iPod and cell-phone integration. The cabin screams sports car with its low seats, bold controls and gauges, and rich details.
The lush curves of the 370 are pleasing to the eye. The new “fangs” on the front grill, large “fishhook” headlights and taillights and oversize chrome door handles may not appeal to all, but it’s hard to imagine anyone calling this an ugly vehicle. Considering its performance, price and looks all together, it seems clear Nissan has moved in the right direction with its Z.

Im in love with the entire z line these are the best driving most fun cars ever. My son has a 2006 350z and I am buying a 2012 370z Im sure well end up with a 400z before its said and done. I will say there are a few years they have issues with burning oil and window motors have to be replaced regularly but its a small price to pay for pure satisfaction Oct 01, 2022

This is a great car its way better than I expected. For the year this car is it has really low mileage and is well taken care of. The only thing I dont like is the visibility when switching lanes is hard to see unless you add fisheye mirrors on the side mirrors. Overall a great car.May 26, 2022

This is an awesome car, it’s getting dated so don’t expect so much from it but it’s rwd, has over 300 horsepower isn’t too heavy and it’s quick. Great weekend driver especially if you get the Bose speaker system! Awesome carMar 11, 2021

The 2009-12 370Z is an excellent choice for someone who likes sports cars and knows how to drive them. It has the looks of the classic Datsun Z but with wider fenders and way more engine. The 6 speed manual is fun and easy to shift and goes well with the drive by wire throttle. The seats are roomy and comfy. May 04, 2012

As with most professional reviews, I agree that the performance of the car is great, especially for the relative value. Plenty of punch coming on an on-ramp, and it handles the twists and turns the way you'd want from a rear wheel drive sports car.
I haven't had too much experience with ownership cost yet, as I've only had it six months. Fuel mileage is livable. On the highway, which is mostly what I drive, it's okay. (high 20s) If you want to give it some juice though, it'll drain the tank pretty quickly. It's hard to strike a happy middle ground with this car.
Visibility is pretty crappy when you're trying to back out of a parking spot, particularly when you're surrounded by SUVs. (Of course, the only way to see around SUVs is the be in another SUV.) However, with the mirrors you can see the dimensions of the car VERY easily, which makes parking easy, especially if you're parallel parking or backing in somewhere.
The syncorev matching feature is awesome. As someone who didn't have a whole lot of experience driving stick before this car, it was a godsend until I ironed out the kinks.
Of course this is not a car for someone who has a lot of practical needs. Cargo space is enough for about, I'd say, three bags of groceries laid sideways, and it is a two-seater. But hey, that's why my wife has a car.
Road noise is also something people have complained about. It is a bit loud, I think due in part to the OE runflat tires, which I won't be using when it's time to replace them. Overall the noise is passable, to me. That's something you'd have to evaluate on your own.Mar 07, 2012

Great Performance, but would be better with a twin-turbo mod. Look is just awesome, outside and inside. I really like the fact that you can unlock, start engine, and lock with your keys in your pocket. Very fun to drive when u remove traction control :PAug 16, 2010

This car has been great since day one. I've taken it to the track and it performed very well in almost every aspect. I added an oil cooler which from what I've learned is necessary for track time. The brakes need some minor upgrading to really compete, and that will be taken care of soon.May 25, 2010

It does what you want it to do. It's swifty and quick. The looks reminds me of my all time favorite Datsun 240z, but you don't get the same feeling. It's fun to drive, but i prefer older Z's. I get about 17 to the gallon. It's not bad for the way i drive, it's a big improvement from my 11mpg 1990 300zx.Nov 06, 2009

The power band is smooth, constant, and impressive. I have not had a chance to "let 'er rip" but I can barely wait to do so. The build is very solid and I expect that to last for years to come. The Synchro Rev Match is amazing, to say the least. It works so perfectly it doesn't feel like I am in a different gear. I find I turn it off for normal driving because I am not used to it. I know once I start to reaally drive it I will leave it on. I initally did not think I would like the smaller car but I was wrong. I turn a lot of heads when I go down the street. One of the workers at a high-luxury condo I worked on thought I was a resident. It is a blast to drive. My girlfriend drove my car to a party and was asking if she could drive back. The only complaint is I noticed a very low speed grumble when turning the wheel when I left the dealership. Some road surfaces make more noise than others but that happens more in my current 300zx which I attribute to tires. Using the BlueTooth phone was also amazing. I called my mother from my car and I know she thought I was in my office. I bought the pearl white with the persimmon interior. There are three pockets for interior storage but all are pretty small. I wish more interior colors were available but the persimmon is striking. I seriously considered tbe black exterior but am extremely glad I went with white. The only change I see in the future is a new stereo. This one is not bad at all and creates a decent soundstage, but it could be better. I just hope the speakers do not have their own amps like my 93 did. I used a remote for volume and changing from cd to radio in my 93. The volume control is so well placed I find I do not use the steering wheel controls. This car has WOW factor all over it! I was realy planning on buying a Nismo 350 last year and am really, really glad I waited for this 370.May 08, 2009

Right now I love everything about my Z. I'd say that of all the cars I've owned it has been one of best purchases.

Build quality is superb, even in comparison to the well-built 350Z. There is not a hint of a noise or tremor from any of the panels/interior pieces. Exhaust sounds nicer from the outside than from in the coupe, and the acceleration I cannot fully experience for another 600mi. Initial turn in is far more planted than the 350, but feels a bit sloppy in comparison to my beloved nismo 350z. Exiting a corner is done with supreme confidence, as there is not a hint of oversteer...unless I'm being overly gentle with the still green motor. Nonetheless, the limited slip diff in this one feels less pronounced because of the abundance of grip from the wider Bridgestones and weaker dampening(again in comparison to the nismo 350). Gas mileage is better than in the 350, given that you can drive it like a diesel-NO fun...otherwise it gulps into the low teens as if you were ravaging a 350. Definitely a more mature car, and faster on paper...but I'm not sold on the fun factor. There is drama missing.Feb 21, 2009

2009 Nissan 370z 7 Speed Auto Trans shifting issue.
My 370z has stopped automatically shifting and when it reaches between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm it starts to miss and breakdown. It won't shift out in automatic shift mode but will in manual shift mode.
