The numbers for the 2006 SL500 may be a bit deceiving. After all, a 302 horsepower 5.0 liter V8 with 339 ft-lbs of torque just doesn't seem all that special when compared to similar cars in its class.
But the SL500 justifies its high price tag and modest numbers with its performance (as well as loads of creature comforts in the cabin which scream "luxury").
The car also looks good. The SL500 is a classic convertible roadster with German engineering to cut down road noise, even when the top is down. The styling was "low, sleek, with just the right amount of fender flares."

It's also one of the heaviest, weighing in at 4,411 pounds - as heavy as some SUVs and more than 200 pounds heavier than the SL500 it is modeled after.
The SL55 AMG is made in limited quantities by the German automaker's high-performance AMG division. That means you won't see too many of these cars even in the most posh neighborhoods, but you will be the instant envy of your driving club if you secure one.
What does the AMG upgrade in the form of the SL55 get you over the more typical SL500 model? Speed. In road tests the SL55 AMG covered zero to 100 in 10.9 seconds and a quarter mile in 13 seconds at 110 miles - numbers the SL5000 didn't come close to breaching.

A sports roadster on steroids, the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL600 is a step up from the popular SL500. The car is perhaps best know for its 5.5 liter, twin power V12 engine that pumps out an astonishing 493 horses and 590 feet of torque.
That translates into a luxury sports roadster that can go from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in a mere 4.5 seconds. While recent years have seen the addition of a standard seven-speed gear box to the SL500, the SL600 sticks with the traditional, five-speed automatic.
Drivers did complain about operating the audio and navigation systems through the COMAND interface. One of the favorite features, however, was the car's retractable hardtop.

And knowing where you're going is important in a car that can get you there fast. A 604 horsepower, V12 engine makes it one of the most powerful vehicles in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. One owner joked that he warned his neighbors before starting the SL65 AMG "in case they're sleeping."
Mercedes builds big, heavy cars - the SL65 AMG checks in at more than 4,000 pounds - but also builds big, powerful engines that lend the vehicle super car performance that "belies its weight." Owners also liked the "muscle-car-era exhaust note."
