Mercedes has slimmed the C-Class lineup considerably for 2006, discontinuing both the wagon and coupe body styles. Power plant options have also been reduced, and every 2006 C-Class style is V6-powered.
The entry-level C230 has swapped the 1.8 liter four for a new 201 horsepower, 2.5-liter V6. The also modest C240 becomes the C280, thanks to a new 228 horsepower, 3.0-liter V6. Finally, a new 268 horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 transforms the C320 into the C350. Transmissions have also been upgraded for 2006: the 4Matic models receive a more refined five-speed automatic, while the rear-wheel-drive models get a new seven-speed automatic.
Mercedes has cut the number of C-Class trim levels in half for 2006, now offering just two AWD and four RWD sedans. The C230 is the entry point, and Mercedes has once again designated it as a sport sedan. There are two models wearing the 280 badge, both luxury sedans, available with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. The same drive train options apply to the C350.
All C-Class sedans come standard with the luxury basics, including full power accessories, a tilt/telescope leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate controls, interior air filter, vinyl and leather upholstery, heated power mirrors, a CD player, alloy wheels and a trip computer. Key safety features include front side airbags, curtain side airbags, front-seat active head restraints, ABS, brake assist, an anti-skid system, and daytime running lights.
The C-Class has been lauded for the the typical Mercedes reasons: build quality, refinement, amenities, quietness, and styling. The availability of all-wheel drive and a few potent engine options also make this entry-level Benz a solid value in its class.
Reviewers have warned that the Sports Sedans may not be suited to all Benz shoppers. Test drivers reported a firm and involving ride, due to the sport-tuned suspension, and a slight lack of refinement in the manual transmission. Steering here is not as responsive as the M3 or Audi S4, but it is precise and balanced enough for most enthusiasts.
What owners say
"Overall, many drivers really enjoy the 2006 Mercedes-Benz C-Class for its blend of luxury, performance, and reliability. The build quality, handling, and stylish design are often highlighted as favorites. However, some owners mentioned that it can be heavy on fuel and the back seating could be more spacious. There are also concerns about higher maintenance costs and a few dislikes related to automatic transmission and other minor cosmetic issues."
I picked up my 2007 (the review parameter allowed only 2006), C 350 Sports Sedan (U.S. Spec.) from the Stuttgart factory in November. As I pulled away from the factory and entered the Autobahn, I realized that I was driving my dream. Deep power and crisp handling kept me in the fast lane where one needs to generate at least 110+mph - the C 350 readily lead the pack easily cruising at 125mph. The 7 speed automatic was silky, shifting smoothly up and down the gear range. Comfortable sport seating and excellent vision in all directions enabled exceptional road condition management. Heavy rain as I approached my destination was easily managed by the rain sensing wiper system and tires that were sure-footed on all surfaces at speed. The 350 continues to deliver the performance, comfort and reliability that made it a clear choice over the Audi A4 and 3 Series BMW.
December 30, 2006I purchased this car after driving a Volvo s60, and a Saab 9-3. Both of those cars were excellentdrivers. The Mercedes however, is a step above in every way (except the Volvo seats). Brakes are excellent, acceleration is decent, handling is tight yet soft. This car is extremely solid and quiet. 5 stars for this car!
February 17, 2013Manual transmission is very good for this car. I like it a lot. Especially the gas millage is very good as well, I had a record at 35mpg for one time, and 34 mpg for couple times. Usually it will stay around 29 to 30 mpg.

June 1, 2009awesome car. i would prefer an AMG to anyone who would want both excellent performance and awesome styling. the 5.5 liter v-8 roars as you accelerate and the exceleration is not comparable to other luxury makers. maintenance is very low to none as well.
December 5, 2009Overall, it is a beautiful car, comfortable and fast. Drives well and steady. Great for commuting to work or bigger trips. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Mercedes brand. As always high quality car and perfect, detailed machine. Looking to buy more.
January 2, 2015Brilliant car to drive! Smooth over most tarred roads. Bit heavy on petrol - but it is an automatic. The brakes are awesome - even if they leave lots of brake dust on the mag wheels. The aircon does not feel that strong on the lower fan speeds, so just crank the fan up full.
August 21, 2008I've driven many company car but this has got to be the best build quality and reliable performance.
January 7, 2008I am so happy with my purchase! The car has every feature I want and more. It’s in great shape and it’s a luxury car at an affordable price. Great benz!
January 19, 2021given that Ive had this car since it was new and now it has over 100K and still performing optimally. I would recommnend it for almost anyone who is looking for sportiness and dependability as well as excellent customer service from MB when needed.
March 22, 2014Precise and controlled handling and braking, built to last - never needs repairs/tune-ups/heavy maintenance, very luxurious - black leather interior with coupled with all the delightful electronic amenities, very beautiful - has the style and sophistication expected of Avantgarde, very fast, fuel efficient but expensive to own in the first place. Extremely fun to drive - you have to be in it to feel it. Hoping to add 17" chrome mags (or maybe just high polish, given the condition of SA roads). One downside though - I only discovered afterward that it's not ideal for driving in the suburbs, it was built to fly.
