Built on a truck-like body-on-frame platform and equipped with part-time or full-time four-wheel drive, the 2006 Kia Sorento SUV actually lives up to the name, Sport Utility Vehicle. It's roomy, rugged, and can be taken off-roading, unlike many SUVs on the market. The 2006 Sorento has few changes this year, as it will go through an overhaul for 2007. It comes in two trims, LX and EX, both featuring a 192-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine. A 5-speed automatic is standard, and there is a 5-speed manual option for the LX.
The Sorento comes in either 2WD or part-time 4WD, but the EX can be equipped with Torque on Demand 4WD, which automatically sends power to the wheels that need it. Low-range gearing means it can tackle paved or unpaved roads. The 2006 Sorento is a mid-size SUV built for four or five passengers, and only has two rows of seats. When folded flat, there is 66 cubic feet of storage space, which isn't much more than what you get with the Sportage. The LX is the base model, with full power features, a CD player, and cruise control. The EX adds more convenience, such as a power driver's seat, sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors, foglights, and cargo nets. A Luxury Pack is offered with the EX if you want leather seats, upgraded audio system, and the Torque on Demand. A Sport Pack for the LX comes with foglights, a roof rack, keyless entry, and step rails.
ABS brakes are only an option on the Sorento, but it does come with dual front and side curtain airbags for each row and receives four and five-star crash ratings. The overall style is sporty and sleek for an SUV, which owners really like. Other highlights include the roominess and comfort for all passengers, the off-roading option, and the set of standard features. Poor gas mileage is always a negative with any SUV. The 2006 Sorento feels underpowered, and the truck platform gives it a rough ride.

I need an SUV type vehicle because of the way the driver sits up higher than in reg auto. The frame is above the ground higher than reg. autos. That makes it easier for me to get in and out of. I have arthritis in almost all my joints and this type of auto is safer. In my opinion.Oct 29, 2020

I bought this vehicle when it had about 20,000 miles on it and proved to be reliable until at about 50,000 miles. Immediately past 50,000 miles I began to experience multitude of problems with the vehicle. Despite doing regular tune ups and carrying out other recommended services, the problems keep coming. Terrible on gas, and the car blows front headlight bulbs often. $15 each this is a constant pain. Very poor resale value on Kia Products. Probably won't buy another Kia Product.
Should be a recall for this electrical Issue on blowing front headlight bulbs.
You should read about the owners of these in Alaska where it's dark half the year.Sep 28, 2014

I love my KIA, I was a skeptic of Kia's until I bought this Sorento. 152k miles and sgtill running strong!! Lots if power, I push we go!! I love the tight clutch and the options make it a great choice. I love this Kia and would recommend one to anyone as well I plan to buy one again in my future!!Aug 31, 2014

there is a lot of electrical issues for the car. Also, has problems with the AC Compressor. But there are a lot of good things, I love the room in the vehicle and you can lay the seats down in the back and you have a large cargo area,May 17, 2014

Have driven this car mostly under off-road conditions for 3 months straight. It had 137,000 km’s on it so, the engine was pretty much beaten up. Having said that, the overall off-road performance was quite satisfactory. The ground clearance was helpful most of the time but it’s difficult to say the same thing for the torque being generated from the 2.5 liter engine. When driving at midrange rpm, it feels fine and roars just like a school bus as the turbo kicks in. However when you try to take off against a steep hill it simply chokes. The vehicle lacks explosive power which is very important for going off-road. Because of this fact (and the excess weight of course) the car feels really bulky and that conveniently supports my opinion of SUV’s being very inessential for general use. Once I forgot to shift out of the all-wheel drive and kept going a little above 50 km/h for few minutes which caused a really fierce overheating problem that got kind of scary. One other shocking thing is that the A/C is not powerful enough for cooling when driving with 3 other passengers. The retractable antenna goes in and out as you turn the radio off and on. The one I was driving was making clanking sounds as it was failing to do so. Still, it can be said that it somewhat looksgood and comes out among other SUV’s with the two-colored body paint.Dec 25, 2010

My kia is great, I actually raced it at Rockingham Dragway one weekend and it suprised all the people there that it performed so well. I even beat a camaro my first time. Kia's are really well built cars, and even thought the Sorento is an SUV its gas mileage isn't all that bad.Jul 20, 2009

Dash noise on 2006 Kia Sorento
I have a 2006 Kia Sorento. I was leaving for vacation and just as I merged onto the highway, a noise appeared from the dashboard. At first I thought I had a hole in the windshield, however, then the noise came even when I opened the window. The sound was like a fan getting stuck on something but still turning. The car accelerated easily and no pressure lost. The faster I drove the faster the noise came. When the window was open, you could hear it from the door panel as well. The engine itself never lost power nor did any lights appear on the dashboard. It however was an annoying sound which lasted the entire trip of 10 hours. What could the noise be?
