Few SUVs can provide the combination of utility, capability, luxury, performance, and value found in a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
One year after a complete redesign, the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee truly offers something for everyone. The lineup expands with a new Off-Road Package for the base Laredo trim, a new luxury-oriented Overland trim, and a new performance-tuned SRT-8 model that has more than 400 horsepower and screams to 60 mph in under five seconds. Jeep also makes stability control standard on all 2006 Grand Cherokees.

For last year’s redesign, Jeep sought a bolder, yet cleaner and more aerodynamic, look for its flagship SUV. The result is an appealing vehicle properly incorporating all of the requisite Jeep styling cues. The round headlights cutting into the hood and residing in a single housing do make the Grand look less grand, though.
You won’t mistake the new SRT-8 version for anything else. Sitting on a lowered performance suspension, it adopts a slammed look over massive 20-inch polished aluminum wheels. Subtle styling modifications and a center-mounted dual exhaust outlet complete the custom look.
While it represents an improvement over the previous-generation Grand Cherokee, this Jeep’s interior still isn’t up to par in relation to its price. Mainly, acres of hard plastic and a lack of sharp color contrasts make the Grand Cherokee look dull and feel inexpensive on the inside, though the new Overland and SRT-8 trim levels do their best to eliminate that perception.
The dashboard and the controls are laid out in a modular and symmetrical fashion, making it easy for Jeep to accommodate left- and right-hand drive in the SUV maker’s various global markets.

When it comes to the Grand Cherokee, you pick a trim level and you get a specific engine. But they all have a 5-speed automatic, and they all offer 4-wheel drive (4WD) as standard or optional equipment.
Grand Cherokee Laredos have a 3.7-liter V6 engine making 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or a choice between Quadra-Trac I (full-time 4WD) and Quadra-Trac II (part-time 4WD with low range). A new Off-Road Package is available with Quadra-Trac II, adding skid plates, tow hooks, and off-road tires to the Grand Cherokee.
Step up to Limited trim for a 4.7-liter V8 good for 235 hp and 305 lb-ft, with RWD standard and Quadra-Trac II 4WD an option. This V8 is also available as an upgrade for the Laredo trim.
A 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 is standard with Overland trim. It generates 330 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque, delivered to the rear wheels unless you get Quadra-Trac II 4WD. This engine is an option for Limited trim.
The Grand Cherokee SRT-8 is fortified with a 6.1-liter “Hemi” V8 churning out 420 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. This version of the SUV has a special electronic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, a lowered performance suspension, and 20-inch aluminum wheels with performance-oriented rubber. Jeep says it will accelerate to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and is actually worth driving on a racetrack.
No doubt, the latest Grand Cherokee is better to drive on pavement, in large part thanks to a new independent front suspension and plenty of input from German engineers as part of the DaimlerChrysler marriage. Better yet, the Grand Cherokee improves for daily driving without losing the off-roading capability that makes it perfect for weekend adventuring.
The 3.7-liter V6 engine is merely adequate in this application, making one of the smoother and more powerful V8 engines a better choice. For maximum traction off-road, you’ll want the Quadra-Drive II 4WD system for its 2-speed transfer case and front, center, and rear limited-slip differentials.
Perversely, the Grand Cherokee SRT-8 is good to drive. Fast, responsive, and incomprehensively capable on the pavement, it proves that a single vehicle can serve two widely disparate purposes.

A 5-passenger midsize SUV, the 2006 Grand Cherokee offers comfortable front seats that feel firm at first but prove supportive over time. As has always been true of the Grand Cherokee, the rear seat is a tighter squeeze than might be expected.
Standard equipment includes air conditioning, power accessories, a power driver’s seat, and remote keyless entry. Limited trim adds leather upholstery, automatic climate control, a premium sound system, a power front passenger’s seat, and power-adjustable pedals.
Overland trim is new for 2006, installing real wood trim, metallic accents, Ultrasuede seat inserts, and leather on the console and armrests. It also gets a standard navigation system, rear parking sensors, side curtain airbags.
The performance-tuned SRT-8 is based on Limited trim, adding all of its go-fast goodies plus a pair of front sport seats with larger bolsters. You can option it with many of the Overland’s extras.
As far as utility goes, the Grand Cherokee offers 34.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat and 67.4 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. When properly equipped, a Grand Cherokee can tow up to 6,500 pounds.

Jeep offers the modern stereo and connectivity features people want in a midsize SUV.
Laredo trim is basic, equipped with a CD player and an auxiliary audio input jack. A CD changer, an MP3 player, and a Boston Acoustics premium sound system are standard with Limited and SRT-8 trim. The new Overland adds navigation and satellite radio, each of which is available on the Limited and SRT-8
Additional upgrades, depending on the trim level, include Uconnect Bluetooth for your cell phone, which allows for hands-free calling. A rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player is also available.

With the addition of stability control as a standard feature, the 2006 Grand Cherokee is safer than ever. Buyers can option the SUV with side curtain airbags, which we highly recommend, but side-impact airbags for the front seat occupants are unavailable.
In crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Grand Cherokee 5-star ratings in every assessment, plus a 4-star rating for rollover resistance when equipped with 4WD. Versions with 2WD are more likely to roll, as suggested by their 3-star rating in this regard.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Grand Cherokee a Good rating for frontal-impact moderate overlap protection and a Good rating for its seats and head restraints. However, even with the optional side curtain airbags, the Grand Cherokee rates as Marginal for side-impact protection.

In spite of a reputation for mediocre reliability, Jeeps carry brand cachet and, in turn, command a price premium. Nevertheless, the Grand Cherokee’s overall value equation is strong, especially If you need maximum off-roading capability, or you’re seeking a high-performance SUV.

I cannot elaborate a lot on the car. I have had it for less than a week. Overall, I think it is a great car. Mechanically and esthetically. I have already had a Grand Cherokee 1998, I miss it to this day. This one is of course a great evolution, plus 8 cylinders. Great on the road, spacing inside is very well managed. The big problem that persists with these cars is the storage compartment and the spare tire location.
Other than that, Today, I would strongly recommend it.

The car is underpowered and lacks ground clearance. They should drop it from production and replace it with the tried-and-true old Cherokee Scout with the 4.0 straight 6 engine.

I bought this car new. My wife has always wanted a Jeep, so I got her this one. Didn't take long for her to change her mind, as soon as she realized how much it cost to drive, ie: fuel. The Jeep was good on trips, and I absolutely loved driving it in the mountains. I set the cruise and the Jeep would keep the speed within 5 mph of the setting wether I was giong up a hill or coming down. One excellent feature.Dec 17, 2014

Don't get me wrong... it's still an American made SUV with typical quality issues but nothing I feel worth complaining about. The OVERLAND Edition enhanced trim level got some help from me with oversized black steel rims and tires, tinted windows and wheel rain guards.
Other small modifications have improved gas mileage and boosted performance. Resonator has been removed from exhaust system and a MagnaFlow glasspack muffler makes for a perfect street roar. Truck sticks to road better than any Corvette I've owned with oversized front and rear sway bars and the Bilstein shocks and struts provide the perfect height and aggressive stance. Adding wider tires provides stability and stance. Cross drilled rotors and high performance brake pads provide powerful braking ability.
The OVERLAND edition combined with my upgrades makes this a unique vehicle. I love to drive it. Nov 02, 2014

The WK series Grand Cherokee is an overall good SUV but the 4.7L is very very thirsty... (I imagine the 5.7L as well). Power is sufficient although a little more wouldn't hurt.
Ride is comfortable but not as roomy as I expected, especially if you have the sunroof which lowers the overall headroom by another inch-inch and a half.Aug 12, 2013

Jeep Grand Cherokees may have small problems every now and then but you can't beat their style, performance and off road ability for the money. The 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee provides the right amount of interior room for 2 or 3 people. It is the perfect size for weekend trips, off road fly fishing destinations, pet transportation and kayak hauling. At the same time it is not to big to fit in small parking spaces. This car was incredible. I had very few problems overtime. The only thing I have to say bad about it is the gas mileage, but when you're buying a Jeep, you don't care about that. Enjoyed this jeep when I had it. There was a recall on it for the breaks which was repaired. I never had a break problem with it before the recall was mentioned to me. This Jeep drives nice, its comfortable, no blind spots, roomie, and fast. The removable back seats, power everything, cruise control, and steeling wheel controls for cruising and radio were a plus.Dec 10, 2009

In short, I was obsessed with it but mechanically its definitely garbage. Chrysler. Enough said. Amazing acceleration for such a big truck, even with my 22's. Was the HEMI 5.7L. Don't get me wrong its a great engine just not reliable in the end. Gas mileage was horrible... with the rims I averaged 9mpg, 12 or so without. Fully loaded from navigation to built in bluetooth to the towing package - which I actually used once. Invested way too much $$$$ into it... stainless steel - not chrome, chrome ones rust - top of the line manik grille guards, side tubes and rear taillight guards. Remote starter. Yeah the bling blinging wheels. Had to get rid of it due to unfortuate mechanical problems we won't mention as well as that MPG because at the time it was pushing $4/gallon and yeah those $1200+ MONTHLY speedpass bills weren't good.Jul 07, 2009

Factory 20inch wheels. No room for spare so makes it a difficult decision to go to 22's and not using the run flat tires.
I avg 12mpg. Very fun to drive. A lot nicer than my 99 Jeep.

This car is an average american jeep offroad, its performance is great and is interesting. The build quality isnt great as bits are coming loose and coming off and has broken down a few times. My Jeep is amazingly fun to drive. It's quality is the best of the best, and the performance of it is amazing. The cost is really worth your money although it's an expensive vehicle. It will never, ever let you down! Although, if you want something with amazing gas mileage, yeah, I wouldn't recommend it for that factor, but it's truly an amazing vehicle to have. Gas mileage sucks when my lead foot wife is driving, but I can get it up and over the Manufacture MPG. AWD is awesome and traction, stability and rollover safety is awesome. Generally I love this vehicle, not crazy about the gas mileage but what can you expect with 420HP. Have had only minor issues with the car, brake pads had to be replaced at 20K for over $1G (Brembo). I would certainly recommend this vehicle for someone who wants speed and performance in an SUV, the only comparable SUV would be the Porsche and that is over $100G.Jun 14, 2008

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland is an amazing specimen that will easily devour a "luxury" competitor of similar breed with much less effort (and by effort I mean $$$). I just bought a used 2006 and am just as floored as the adjustable accelerator pedal should be in this vehicle. I will talk a lot about the power in this ride but its ride and appointments can't be overshadowed.
I have read poor reviews on handling. I pushed the limits of speed's favorite initial and the Overland handled more than adequately in the curve-carving department. The HEMI doesn't need a comment because it really does speak for it self. My buddy has a Dodge Durango with the same engine and it growls louder under his hood. While the roar is satisfying, I believe Jeep has simply improved cabin insulation. I hold this opinion as my wife complained that I shouldn't speed out of our driveway. I don't speed; (in our neighborhood anyway) the low gears of this rig will turn the domes of any spectators, willing or otherwise.
I just realized I must sound like I work for Jeep or its ownership. I assure you I do not. I am just a happy consumer that is 34 years old and has been frugal in all of his vehicle purchases. The best part is I purchased this Jeep used and a bag filled with depreciation is gone. Depreciation is why you shouldn't buy new. Duh, everyone knows that but the majority of the U.S. buys new, go figure (own more than you show I say!).
The Overland is amazing. I won't list features; Google has all your answers.
Lastly, my wife has a powerful Infinity SUV, my good friend a Yukon Denali. Both individuals have ridden in my Jeep and wished it was theirs. By the way, my buddy with the rig named after an Alaskan park spent almost twice what I just spent on the JGC Overland. To answer your unanswered question, I spent lees than $30k.

What's wrong with my jeep
I have a 2006 jeep grand Cherokee limited and it will only move if it's in 4wd low and then it won't go over 35 or so and it says 4th gear on the dash. When I put it in regular drive it won't go at all when o put it in gear. You can hear the motor changing sounds when I shift gears. I've changed the fluid in tranny and filter and changed the shift motor for the transfer case. I don't have much money and it's our only vehicle. If I don't fix it soon and for cheap we will be hurting.
