After a decade during which Ford’s ungainly, unimpressive, and unloved Taurus essentially decimated the automaker’s dominance in the midsize family sedan segment, the company debuts the crisply styled, sharply tailored, and undeniably handsome 2006 Ford Fusion.
When Ford redesigned the popular Taurus for the 1996 model year, the company shot itself in both feet with a double-oval-barreled shotgun, and in the process, handed the midsize family sedan segment to Honda, Nissan, and Toyota wrapped in a pretty red bow and served on a glittering silver platter.
Why it took the company 10 years to rectify this mistake is anyone’s guess, but the all-new 2006 Ford Fusion has the design, the performance, and the equipment to properly compete. The question is this: Is the Fusion too late to rebuild Ford’s midsize car market share?

Ford keeps things simple with the new 2006 Fusion. Buyers select from S, SE, and SEL trim, and they decide whether they want a 4-cylinder or a V6 engine.
Every one of them has a clean, architectural appearance, and if the styling looks familiar it’s because Ford previewed the looks with the sensational Ford 427 Concept vehicle shown at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Switching from the concept car’s rear-drive platform to a more practical front-drive layout has changed the dimensions, and the production Fusion lacks the Chiclet-style taillights on the concept in favor of less appealing triangular units with oddly garish chrome surrounds (the only styling miscue on the entire car), but otherwise, this is a great-looking sedan, shiny grille and all.
Neatly organized, the Fusion’s interior layout and design are comparatively plain, though Ford tries to dress things up in SEL trim with glossy trim, chrome accents, exposed seat stitching, and even an analog clock just under the air vents.

In an even more dramatic departure from the concept vehicle, the 2006 Fusion does not offer a 427 cubic-inch V8 engine. Instead, your choices are a 160-horsepower 2.3-liter 4-cylinder or a 221-hp 3.0-liter V6. Neither serves as a benchmark for strength in the segment.
The 4-cylinder offers a 5-speed manual gearbox, but most Fusions will come with a 5-speed automatic. The V6 is paired with a fairly sophisticated 6-speed automatic. All three transmissions power the Fusion’s front wheels.
Of the two engines, the V6 is the most rewarding, supplying reasonably quick acceleration. As far as ride and handling are concerned, the Fusion is legitimately enjoyable to drive, with quick reflexes and quiet, composed ride quality. It helps that Ford, through its partial ownership of Mazda, bases the Fusion on the same platform as the impressive Mazda6.
Taken together, the Fusion’s driving dynamics are competitive with the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Camry, if not class-leading.

Roomy for four people (five fit when necessary), the 2006 Fusion comes with cloth or leather upholstery and features power-adjustable front seats. The car is comfortable, the steering wheel is pleasing to grip, and the controls are laid out in a logical manner.
Strangely, though, what appears to be knobs are, in fact, dual-purpose round buttons. The only knob is the one for stereo power and volume adjustment. Additionally, the turn signal stalk is positioned at an odd angle, which takes some getting used to.
Storage space is adequate, and Ford includes a covered bin at the top of the dashboard that is good for melting whatever you might store there. The trunk is roomy, measuring 15.8 cubic feet.

Every 2006 Fusion has remote keyless entry and a stereo with a CD/MP3 player. A trip computer is a part of SE and SEL trim, and the upscale SEL further includes a 6-disc in-dash CD changer, a radio data system, speed-sensing volume control, and automatic climate control. Options for the SEL include an auto-dimming rearview mirror and automatic headlights, among other features.

Choose a Fusion S, and you’ll get dual front airbags. That’s it. Safety-related options include antilock brakes and a package that installs front-seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags for both rows of seats. Versions with a V6 have traction control, but you can’t get stability control for this car.
In crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Fusion earns 4-star ratings across the board. Adding the side-impact airbags package improves the rating for driver protection to 5 stars.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is less charitable. In fact, the 2006 Fusion earns not a single Good rating from the organization.
After the first round of testing, Adrian Lund, president of the IIHS, said in a statement: "The Fusion is a disappointment because it's a brand new design. Ford has done a good job with some other recent models, but the Fusion is at the back of the pack among midsize sedans for overall safety performance."
Ford made changes to the Fusion but the ratings did not improve. The car gets an Acceptable rating in the moderate offset frontal impact test, a Poor rating in the side-impact test (without airbags), an Acceptable rating for roof strength, and a Marginal rating for the ability of the seats and head restraints to protect occupants.

With prices ranging from under $18,000 to less than $22,500, the Ford Fusion is less expensive than rivals like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. At the same time, though, it is not quite as refined, doesn’t offer the same virtual guarantee for reliability, can’t match them for fuel economy, and certainly is not as safe to drive.
Unquestionably, the new 2006 Ford Fusion is a better car than the failed Taurus. But it’s not quite up to snuff in many of the ways that matter most.

other than this current problem I have not had any issues with this car except I had a manual that the cletch kept going out. but my eye
domestic has been very good to me. until now the check engine light has been on for over 6 months now. plugged it in and code says its getting too much O2 its been having problems with jerky shifting and RPMs going up past 5 while on the freeway even in cruise control. it also died several times while going up hill. last week was going 70 on freeway and all the sudden decelerates and would only spratically let me accelerate. it wouldnt shift just raved the RPMs higher and higher. pulled over and parked it as it gradually came to a stop as it would not accelerate anymore. I bought carb cleaner and sprayed it into the throttle body which seemed to fix the problem after burning off the carbon. sounded normal again and I was so happy. go to get back on the freeway and as I made it to 40 mph it starts all over this time I couldnt get it back above 20 and had to drive down the emergency lane while it jerked and wouldnt shift and barly accelerate. so I pulloff again this time I parked at a restraunt the owner asked me to move so go to start it and it wont even crank. This car is arguably the best car, overall,, I have ever owned. Big but small.
Slow but quick. She handles everything I ever ask of her with no problems. The
Fusion is a well-created, highly-researched car. Ford put more than their fair
share of development into making these, and you can feel it when you sit
behind the wheel. I would ask for a tad more power, but the reliability more
than makes up for it. Everything I ever strived for in my 90s cars (non-leaking
moon roof, fog lights with running lamps, well-located center console) comes
stock on this car. I love it, in and out.
The only detractors that come to mind are the price of maintenance (a brake
job all the way around, just parts, is about $300+), the easily broken
thermostat (two weeks after I got it), the super-touchy electronic throttle, and
the lack of a 6th gear. Mine is a manual, and, at 70 mph, in overdrive, the car

Overall, this car has been extremely reliable
and economical to run. It has certainly met my
needs. There have been no major issues to
report on the car at all. The trunk space is
very good I think. Currently can comfortable
haul a young family of 4 (two small kids in car
seats); plenty room for strollers and shopping,
or luggage for trips.
Performance: If you are looking to get around
fast, this isn't your car, wasn't designed for
that. Acceleration is OK for a 4 cylinder. 5
speed helps the engine a lot.
Build Quality: I would say the build quality is
at the standard expected for this car in its
class and price range. Its not terrible, but
its not European car either.
Appearance: I think this car has a someone
respectable stance to it. Its not an eye turner
for sure, but its no 2006 looking Hyundai
either. It has a sporty look and upright
stance.
Cost of Ownership: As I mentioned above, this
car has been great on the wallet to run. Wheels
are 16" so tires are cheap, I average 26MPG,
not bad for its size and age and maintenance
has been economical.
Fun Factor: Its not extremely sporty but I
think its confidently tuned for a car in its
class. I have challenged the car on some roads

This was my first new car. I got it right before I went away to college. While I was traveling back and forth from home to school, (about a 3 1/2 hour drive) my gas mileage got to be about 25 (highway), but now that I'm home its down to about 21 (city). I love the acceleration in this car (I've burned a little rubber in it). I love the look of the '06 model much better than the new 2010s.Oct 29, 2009

Nimble handling, a nice responsive driver, decent acceleration from the V6. Attractive interior (though I hear that the 2010 version is better), tailored, well-proportioned appearance. Gas mileage is ~24-25 in the summer, but bottoms out ~21-22 in the Michigan winters. My mileage is almost exclusively city, though, so my duty cycle is worst case. When it gets warmed up on a long highway trip, I can get 27-28 mpg. This car is fun for those who need a little fun with their responsible daily driver, perhaps not for those who haven't grown up yet.Apr 22, 2009

The only thing I dislike is the black interior. Shows everything and is hard as hell to keep clean. That goes along with the black outside. I will never own another black car.

Got this on a 3-year lease. I've had it for a little over 2 now. Only issue was with the A/C lines not fully connected at the plant, bled off all A/C refrigerant. Has not been back to the dealer for any other issues.Feb 29, 2008
