After redesigning the Jetta a year earlier, Volkswagen introduced two new models of its popular family sedan for 2006. The high-end Jetta 20T featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that pumped out 200 horsepower. It was linked to a six-speed manual transmission, which was standard. Other standard features included air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, a sunroof, a CD player, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, traction control, and stability control.
Also new was a high-end Jetta GLI, which came with the same engine and transmission as the 20T, but added a sport package that included high-intensity xenon headlights, sport bucket seats, a tighter suspension, and larger 17-inch wheels.
The base engine for the 2006 Jetta was a 150-horsepower, 2.5-liter five-cylinder powerplant, which was linked to a standard five-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic was optional. The base engine powered the Jetta 2.5L trim package, as well as a Value Edition Jetta, which came with a basic list of standard features that included air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, dual airbags, anti-lock brakes, and traction control.
While drivers found the Jetta's new stying to be a bit bland, when compared to earlier models, most had nothing but kind words for the 2006 models. Features and amenities were considered to be generous, and many drivers were impressed with the car's performance, particularly the turbocharged models with the six-speed manual transmissions. On the negative side, some drivers pointed out that gas mileage could be better.

High maintenance vehicle. Somewhat unreliable. First model for the new generation experienced problems with automatic transmission and electronics. Look to buy model years 2008-10 for this generation.

I sought after the 2006 jetta for fuel economy, knowing it has a tremendous amount of other poor quality issues. If you are looking for a MK5 VW be it gas or diesel be prepared for a laundry list of repairs to maintain factory functions and beauty. The MK5 platform is susceptible to horiffic rust in the front fenders, rocker panels, rear wheel arches, trunk and hood. The head liner and door fabric glue fails on all of them regardless of mileage. There are door lock issues caused by a module in the individual door window motors. Dash screens can become inop, and there are a myriad amount of squeaks to chase down. The heater control and related resistor for HVAC motor speed will fail. If you get a model with factory HID headlights, the two sensors that set the leveling of the lights will fail. If you get and automatic trans (known as DSG) repair of it can cost as much as the entire car purchase.
Even though the body looks the same on early production MK5 Jetta, the later production has some key feature that are totally different, it is mainly early models do not have steering wheel control, nor the fuel calculator function in the dash board.
The up side to the Mk5 Jetta TDI is that when the engine is properly maintained it can run well past 300,000 miles. Some people have documented 400 and 500 thousand miles.
When properly maintained the MK5 Jetta is a joy to drive, handling and brakng are impressive, acceleration will vary depending on the engine in the car but even the TDI, which is the lowest horsepower of the available engines, has no issues keeping up with traffic.
If you buy a VW MK5 platform car, make sure you have a VW technician WITH VCDS software. Additionally the knowledge of the special components that fail to be able to keep it in tip top shape.
I am trying to make this review as objective as I can with no success, I own 2 Jettas, and one GTI, all three are 2006 models with one of the Jetta being and early model.

I like driving my car and have had it for 5 years, it is a low maintenance car compared to an Audi or a Bmw. It has good pick up and power. It looks stylish and I like the interior trim and design of my car. The car has very nice body style and has great handling and pickup. The leather and interior trim cosmetics are very cheaply made, so they wear out pretty fast.Apr 27, 2015

Great reliable car, never let me down when I needed it. Inexpensive to service and I save money on gas mileage. Relaxing car to drive but still sporty enough to be fun. Braking and acceleration were nothing special but adequate and the handling was very good.Nov 25, 2014

I've had this car for 100,000 kms and it's been good. I've lost a turbo and clutch but I've also had a few different drivers on this car. Maintenance can be costly but I've noticed that I have fewer repairs that need to be done. I've transitioned this car to my son now because I do trust it. The efficiency was as tested or better on long road trips, we found the seats to be comfortable, and the vehicle to be very responsive to the driver steering or asking for more power, especially in a situation like at speed accelerating to pass a car. Definitely has some get-up-and-go. We rarely experienced any lag in power. All in all a car we would buy again.Jan 14, 2014

I have owned this car for three years after purchasing used. It has been reliable and low cost to own. Currently needs a Dual Mass Flywheel replaced. The recall for this issue skipped this particular vehicle as it was a 2007 model but sold/acknowledged as a 2006. I would buy another.May 07, 2013

One of my favorite drives (which I've owned) of all time. It's quick and very responsive. Loads of trunk space and ample cabin room.
I have never changed so many light bulbs on a car ever. Every once in a while a bunch will burn out one right after another and then stop for a couple of months then start burning out one by one all over again.Feb 06, 2013

good all around fun car. lot of trunk space and comfortable to sit in the front. will keep stock and trade in for VW Scirocco lol nothing wrong with the jetta or even the TDI model but come on....50 mph hatch and looks better than the golf. Had high hopes for the Golf R, but the price isnt right. 15,000 for a scirocco sounds way better than 36,000 for a Golf R.Apr 28, 2012

Overall a great car- loved it's feel and driving, was very happy with it. Although I prefer an SUV, I have no real complaints about the Jetta at all. The Jetta has power, style and fits pretty much anywhere. For a sedan, it has an unbelievable amount of storage capacity. Apr 05, 2012

Love getting almost 600 miles on ONE TANK!
Acceleration is good thanks to the turbo.
Brakes are awesome, stop on a dime, which is
good because this car ride smoothly and you
will be cruising above the speed limit before
you know it. Very little wind noise, handles
like a dream in gusting winds too. Lots of leg
room in the rear. Fuel miser, low maintenance
and fun to drive. Sunroof and premium sound

rides great but I have noticed the gas mileage is not as good as my old 1996 golf probably due to the fact of another cylinder and heavier. IT still feels nimble and quick. Has lots of nice features that I like and it seems well made.Oct 20, 2010

PERFORMANCE: prettty good 4 a 4cylinder, brakeing is great, handling a little
jerky in the fast corners
BUILD QUALITY: you no the thing needs a couple of tweaks here and there but
great and makes little noise whiile going fast
APPERANCE: great looking car inside and out
COST OF OWNERSHIP: doesnt cost that much

Great car! This car handled like a sports car. Suspension was spectacular for a car in this price range. It was a TDI and average mielage was 50 MPG and at times it would do over 60 MPG. Solid car, no rattles or squeaks. Interior was great, easy to access everything from driving position and it looked good.Jun 17, 2010

It performs excellently. Its a sexy car, black paint w/ crome, black leather, cant go wrong. gas mileage is great, a full tank(14+gallons) is about 450+miles. Drives great, wicked fun car to drive and putting that pedal to the floor will never get old.Feb 21, 2010

Great car.Had a 2005 A3 2.0T before this and this is better for my needs as have now gone from spending NZ $ 160-180 every other weekend to NZ $ 80-90.Sure its not as fun as the A3 ( I knew that would be the case ).But once on the open road you wouldnt know that its a TDI under the bonnet.Mid range overtaking seems better that A3. Only regret was not being able to get the diesel power train. The 2.5 still has plenty of torque, and the car handles amazingly. Tiptronic along with just enough traction control makes even the most amateur driver feel like a veteran rally driver. Overall great car for getting five people around comfortably. Jan 25, 2009

I love this car, after having spent 2 years with the older JettaIV. Huge improvement over the previous model in fit and finish, handling, turbo lag and interior space. The car has balanced curves, something lacking in most sedans in its class. I have it lowered 1.5" with Eibach springs and Pirelli PZero's, which gives a huge improvement in body roll, turn in and traction for not a lot of money, and without sacrificing ride comfort - don't suffer with the overly high stock ride height and pathetic factory Michelins!Aug 29, 2008

Car has been in the shop for various problems 2 times for engine cooling fan failure. 4 times for check engine light ( 4 NOX sensors replaced) all under warranty BUT the inconvenience factor was a pain. 5th time for check engine light along with wiring harness and cooling fan total bill $3000.00 plus. One of the safest side impact cars you can get. The TDI gets 40+ MPG so saves you a few bucks. Has TONS of trunk space for those of you that need to go to the store you dont have to take your SUV to fit everything in. And to top it off its diesel so it will last longer than most other cars. The rear seats fold down to fit even more in that trunk of yours. Handling acceleration and braking is good for everyday use, its no race car but who needs one for everyday use? if your looking for that go look at a ferrari.May 16, 2008

I enjoy the amount of features that this car boasts for its driver.
The Transmission is solid and has six speeds for great top end performance.
Its top speed is 130MPH, beat that America with your electronic 100mph limit

Great sedan with excellent build quality. A lot of standard features for the base level
model.
Handling and steering are excellent for a FWD car. Engine has plenty of torque and
adequate
horsepower. Manuel transmission features silky smooth shifter and clutch. Interior
appointments are top notch and has plenty of room for 5 adults. Trunk is a cavern.
Exterior styling could be the cars downside. While the front looks cool and aggressive the
rear end looks bland and Toyota Corolla-like. Fuel economy for me is 28mpg over 2.5

Overall this is a excellent car that I am proud to drive, its great on fuel as well. My TDI is equipped with the executive leather package so I am impressed with the interior as it is too a audi type level. Good handling around corners but slow at take off. The VW Jetta is a nice car, but even nice cars have problems. This car is easily the best in its class but it's also the most expensive. The price is not the problem. In my opinion the problem is the engine is a little weak and the interior is just a hair too small. Widen the car a couple of inches and add about 30-40 HP and this car would be PERFECT

Great looks.
Smooth ride, wonderful handling.
Even the diesel model has that great throaty VW rumble.
The trunk is a canyon. You could just about fit another car in there.
Great pickup, even for a diesel.
Great safety ratings, inadvertantly tested.
Cons:
Oy, those sightlines. They are awful, partly because of the thickness required for the side curtain airbags.
I'm an average height guy. But I have to put the seat so high to see the front of the car, it goes above the lumbar support. Hence, I have to supplement the support with a pillow. Ouch.
I dare you not to mix up the turn signal and the cruise control stalks.
Could use a bit more legroom.
And, it's a VW. No matter how much you save on fuel, you'll end up spending it on parts and serviceFeb 24, 2008

VW Jettas were never meant to be race cars, so i guess it shouldn't really be reviewed like one. However, it does give you a pretty good sense of performance, particularly when you first drive it. The main thing you notice when driving the car is that you barely feel speed. You can literally be doing 90 mph and feel like you are doing 55. Acceleration is by no means blistering, but it is relatively quick and won't get you into any hairy situations trying to merge into traffic. The car is very comfortable for a tiny vehicle, and while the suspension is stiff enough to keep the car from rolling through turns, it is not so bad that your back hurts after a drive to school. Car making a knocking/grinding/scraping noise at lower speeds and turns especially. At higher speeds (50+) More of a clicking sound. Sounds like from the front passenger side, also under the front end. Front breaks are new. Car also wobbles sometimes when slowing to a stop or while driving down the highway. Abs light stays on constantly for a few days now and traction light comes on while car is moving. But noise started before the lights.

Is there a way to manually lock the front passenger door of a 2006 Jetta TDI (without using the electronic lock)??
The front passenger door will not lock when I use the key fob or the driver's side panel. The door is ajar sign is also on. I have ordered the part to fix the issue (electronic), but it won't arrive for almost a week due to the holiday coming up. Is there a way a manually lock the door to temporarily fix the problem?
