The popular little HHR has acquired many admirers across a wide range of age and social circles. Its small but relatively powerful engines (2.2-liter Ecotec I4 rated at 143 horsepower, or a 2.4-liter Ecotec I4 rated at 178 horsepower) provide pep in a car with ample headroom and cargo space. The name actually stands for "Heritage High Roof," so it seems as though Chevy is not only aware but proud of the comfort it provides.
The 2006 edition was the first release of this model, yet it drew many of its features from the Cobalt, making for few first-year woes. The car's pricing starts at $15,990, but can quickly edge toward $20,000 with a stronger engine, integrated MP3 player, and a Pioneer sound system.

The HHR is compact and easy to drive and park. As you can put down one - two - or all three back seats and load through the hatch, its also easy to securely transport a lot of cargo. Luggage, yard equipment, and even bicycles.Apr 09, 2023

A few little design things I would have done differently but mechanically this is a great car - my wife drove it for seven years and we did ZERO repairs other than routine maintenance and a fuse that blew out whenever we jumped somebody else that had a dead battery - power steering fuse blew every time cables got hooked up...weirdest thing!May 03, 2015

This car has been a real trooper over the years. We've consistently gotten 29-32 mpg on road trips, even with 4 adults and luggage in the car. It has lots of room, particularly for adults in the back seat. It has hauled an amazing amount of stuff helping folks move and such. Just love it. Wish Chevy was going to make a new version of it.May 02, 2015

Compact, economic, reliable, good on space, cold a/c, very good on the road, is so comfortable and all controls are on the tips of your hands, stereo sound good for being a factory equipment, the cargo area is big enough to carry all you need from long trips.

I love what this car offers me.. it's comfortable, roomy it has nearly as much cargo space as my trailblazer , it handles great,, gets great gas mileage, it's easy to maintain.. and has had minimal issues. I would recommend the HHR to anyone looking for dependability and economy... with comfort and some style. No downside to owning this car. Feb 08, 2014

I like that it is roomier than expected, it will fit 4 adults comfortably which was surprising. It also has a lot of room in the back. 5 women took it on a long weekend and had it filled to the brim with room left over.Jan 12, 2014

I like the old school look, The cargo capacity is amazing and flat. Fuel economy was great, Pioneer stereo system was better than in any car I owned stock. Very comfortable to get in and out. Car did have tooooo much hard plastic interior. Leather was nice and soft. Performance was so so but good enough for flat travel. Very fun car to drive.
HOWEVER it was plagued by little issues. Front rotors warped, Front suspension was quirky as well as the electronic steering. Chevy had to replace Steering column on quit a few and ignition keys would lock in the ignition with car running. Recall on that. Some water leakage from moon roof drains and firewall leaks.
All that said I would own another 2LT package only as a hobby car. It grew on my like a fungus, Would have kept it but it was hit and the sheet metal is like tissue.Aug 14, 2013

I have had my 2006 Chevy HHR for a year & a half now & so far it has been one of the best cars I have owned. It gets good gas mileage & it is a great family car. I have not had many mechanical problems I have had to change headlights twice but the second time could have been avoided if I had changed them both when I changed the first one which the same goes for the rear blinkers/brake lights. The only other problems I have had with the car was a rubber piece covering an opening under the hood coming unglued but that was easily fixed by using the rubber as a template to make a metal covering which has yet to come off & the front power outlet hasn't worked since I bought it... Which could easily be fixed by buying a new outlet & replacing it but I have just been using the rear one instead. Jun 02, 2013

After having a Navigator prior to owning the HHR I have come to two conclusions. I could have parked the HHR into the back seat of the Navigator. I thought I would get better fuel economy but was wrong. Guess it may be time to get something a bit larger again. Maybe I can see ahead in traffic more frequently.Apr 03, 2013

We bought the HHR new and it now as almost 90 thousand miles on it. It has performed exceptionally well. I do all my own maintenance. I have replace front pads and rotors and new spark plugs. It is my wife's daily driver. Jul 09, 2012

Performance:acceleration average, braking good, handling smooth.
Build Quality: Squeaks and rattles in cold weather
Appearance: Inside leather with heated seats, I like the station setups. Exterior: could have used better paint, chips. Gas mileage is fair but averages the same as a small SUV. The car is fun to drive.Nov 09, 2010

its a four cylinder motor so it definietly does no go fast. handles and brakes fine
was hit in the rear and barely damaged.
the apperance is great because we have pimped it out
awesome economical vehicle for those on a tight budges. with a few mods you can get upwards of 45mpg on the highway.

Fun to drive, Looks very nice inside and out. Drives well, decent acceleration for a four cylinder. Gas mileage is good, about 38 to 40 on the highway. The only thing I can complain about is the brakes, at times they seem seem to pull or struggle when stopping under normal conditions.Jul 21, 2009

the car gets good gas mileage on long trips. It has pretty good acceleration and handles pretty good. My warranty has paid, I had to have the thermostat changed twice and just recently the cam shaft motivator needed to be replaced. All of my repairs seem to occur in the summer. The performance is adequate except for Interstate in the mountains (we take a different car for trips - a Chevy SSR). Braking & handling are good. Ride is very good for a car of this size. It is good for shopping: nice storage space, easy to park. The running board is a necessity for parking lots unless you want a bunch of dents. Only problem we've had was heater / ac fan speed resistor had to be replaced (in warranty). We love the way it looks inside & out Jun 19, 2009

Handles good.
Replaced brakes (routers and all) at only 63000km.
Gas mileage is good.
Quality is not the best...little things have broken like the Chevy symbol on the back of the car.
It is a fun car to drive. Its kinda like a roadster.

we had a number of problems with our 2006 2LT HHR:
-brakes wore out in less than 20K miles
-scratches appeared on rocker panels and rear door because we didn't get the running boards..buy them!
-poor visibility overall but especially for taller drivers through the windshield
-the car took on water through the firewall, so much water that it filled the wells below the drivers' carpet area. what a mess! The battery cable runs through this area.
It was a very distinctive-looking car that I tought would get better gas mileage than the 25 mpg average we got for the 40,000 miles that we owned it.Mar 17, 2009

Solid mini-SUV. Not a sports car by any means. Excellent with the kids and their activities. It's not a horrible automobile, despite it's American heritage (built in Mexico). 32 MPG on my daily commute to Barbourville, which isn't bad considering the size and my lead foot.

Call it a station wagon, call it a light truck, call it a cross-over SUV, but the HHR is a nice car. The build quality is good, only needing warranty repair once to replace a blown blower motor for the vent/AC. It has great retro styling and gets 30 mpg on the highway. The only downsides are sometimes the 2.2L 4-cylinder engine doesn't have the "get up and go" needed for some driving situations, replacement body parts are hard to come by, and even simple DIY jobs like replacing a bulb are complicated. Never the less, I would recommend it to a friend that needs a vehicle with storage space.Jul 20, 2008

Borrowed this car and drove with some trepidation as I'd heard bad things...
Backing out the very first thing I notice was that the back window is TINY and the brakes are REALLY touchy.
So... let's drive it to the first stop sign... press the gas and... eww... what's wrong with this gas pedal??? And why am I hearing the car noises through the radio? OK stop sign ... *gently* press the brakes and...almost bang my head on the windshield. Maybe it's just me being used to my own car's brakes (where you have to tell it to stop)
So... we turn onto the main road and let's see how fast I'm going. Oh, the steering wheel covers the speedometer. Well that's a nice touch! Tilt the wheel up... well... not much better 'cause the dial is so small I can barely make it out. And I have 20/20 vision. And now the wheel is in an uncomfortable position.
So... we drive a little more, that noise coming from the speakers every time I accelerate gets progressively more annoying. The fact that I'm having to sit on top of the steering wheel because this car really isn't nice to my 6' frame is not helping my back at all, either.
OK... let's merge onto the interstate. Check behind me and... well, nice view of the rear of the car since that stupid small window does not provide me with a safe view outside. The blind spot is precisely where I need to be able to see. Thankfully there was nobody in the lane I was merging into.
Leaving the interstate.. same problem when checking the right lane - this thing has awful visibility!
God, I'm glad that's over.
Conclusion: If I paid money for this, I'd be furious... this car is not only awful to drive, it's downright dangerous.

What attracted me to this car was the body style. I have always liked the

Sometimes I miss this car. I liked it's unique looks, but I eventually moved on for something
better-equipped. This was a pretty reliable car over-all. The only quality issue I had was a
misaligned driver's door from the factory. This just made wind noise a little more apparent.
Handling was average for this type of vehicle. Braking was not great. Acceleration was
