Volvo's junior station wagon returned for 2005 completely rejuvenated, from the wonders of the patented Intelligent Vehicle Architecture right down to the new name. That's right - the V40 grew up and became the V50, although it remained the little sibling of the best-selling Swedish wagon, the V70. And that was just fine with many a car buyer whose needs were nicely met by the V50. Those who did not need any more cargo room or towing capacity were happy to save a few thousand on the slightly smaller car. After all, the safety factor was the same, with air bags, ABS, traction control, and protective side beams among the numerous standard features. Base model V50 owners don't enjoy a fuel economy edge over base model V70 owners, as the two wagons use the same engine, a 2.4-liter, 168-horsepower number without benefit of a turbocharger. Some drivers were left craving some additional power, but they had their chance on the car lot, as the T5 trims deliver 218 hp with a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine. North Americans had to be patient to get behind the wheel of this car, which had been available in Europe for about 10 years previous. Many feel it was worth the wait, as they appreciate the design (such as the wonderful slim center console) and performance improvements. But some of the most important changes occurred way behind the scenes with the previously mentioned Intelligent Vehicle Architecture - advancements were made in the car's frontal structure, resulting in improved deformation zones to further protect occupants in a collision.

finding a car that suits all your needs can be difficult. I researched different cars for months, but found that AWD wagons are hard to find in a manual transmission. I was first attracted to its different look and good price tag. The 6-speed makes great use of its available power, and the turbo makes this heavy car move when necessary. you may even surprise that Boy racer with the great low end torque, and the grip from the AWD. The braking in this car is insane, but it does come at a cost. It will eat through brakes much quicker than normal if you brake aggressively.
Fuel mileage is acceptable, but not fantastic. mid-high 20's on the highway, although I was able to crack 30 on an empty highway.
I could go on all day but I will cut to the chase. great safe car for the money.

I´ts a Volvo... :) Startar alltid och går att lita på i alla lägen. "Liten stor bil". Trevlig bil att köra och även att dra släp med! Kan inte vara annat än nöjd. Fast man skulle vilja ha ngt "sportigare" så får man nöja sig med praktiskt ibland :)Nov 22, 2011

It goes 0-100 km/t in 7,2 sec, 235 km/t on top. 220 bhp. It is just nice to drive. Very nice comfort, lovely design, good quality. It´s maybe not a sportscar, but it makes a good compromice May 02, 2010

Performance with 220 horsepower is very adequate. Handling is ok. The car itself has not so much faults but the local service is a real joke. I like the overall appearance and interior decoration. This car is fun to drive!Dec 25, 2009

Performance - Goes like a rocket
Build Quality - very good but does not have enough storage space
Appearance - very good looking car especially in white
Cost - not to sure yet it get 9,5 km/l with me driving

Good fuel economy, brilliant transmission and good
power. 200+ torque, 180bhp, with 6 air-bags. Volvo
made, unbelievably tough car. That was a wagon,
with big space to carry boxes, etc. Transmission is
good, which is an auto-manual thing. Generally

Acceleration is kind of slow, but then again I'm basing that off an S60. Gets pretty good mileage. A few of the interior lights haven't really worked since I got it. I think it's pretty cool to drive. Wish it was a stick though.May 30, 2009

It's a sporty little wagon that has some get up and go.
The turbo makes this car fly. I'm bummed that the
shocks are almost shot and the rear driver's side door
window and lock don't work and need to be repaired.
It's a blast though. The tech cloth interior is prone to
stains. the brakes are cool and I dno't really want to

It was very, very slow. The 2.4 felt like a 1.4. But the T-4 version is a lot better apparently. I did like the stylish interior. It looks reasonable too, less Volvoid than before.
Space wise, well it isn't that capacious inside, but it handles fairly well and can be punted along with reasonable confidence, more so than the V70.
Build is solid- it just needs a bigger engine to shine. Nice warble to the engine tho.Aug 11, 2008

50 mpg, heated seats, mp3, sits on the motorway at 90 all day long,, done 25,000 so far this year, thus a vulva.
Not the biggest boot in the work but more than enough room for all my work gear and my dog!
Dual zone a/c is a nice touch as is the auto dim mirror. Could do with bigger door pockets. Awesome sound system although mine is a factory upgrade.Jul 25, 2008
