2005 Kia Optima Preview summaryImage

The 2005 Kia Optima is marketed as an alternative to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, offering many of the same standard features, but at a lower price point and with a better warranty. According to owners, this mid-size family sedan is a great value, and many feel it has a smoother and more comfortable ride than its big-name competitors. There have been few changes to the Sonata-based Optima since its inception in 2001. For 2005, the upscale EX model gets a one-touch sunroof and special stitching on the optional leather upholstery. All models get clear lens turn signals.

Both the base LX and EX are offered with either a 138-hp, 2.4-liter I4 engine or a 170-hp, 2.7-liter V6. The V6 has better pickup, and these models also offer optional ABS brakes in place of the four-wheel disc brakes. A 5-speed manual is standard on the LX I4, while all other models come with a 4-speed automatic with a Sport shift mode. This transmission is optional on the base LX I4. You'll find cruise control, full power features, and a CD player on the LX, while the EX upgrades to a power driver's seat, wood and chrome accents, a remote garage opener, sunroof, and automatic climate control. EX-only options include heated leather seats, a power passenger seat, and a leather-wrapped wheel.

The 2004 Optima is a bit smaller than the Accord, but still offers nice legroom up front. Trunk space is average, at 13.6-cubic feet, but can be expanded with the 60/40 split-fold rear seats. A rear armrest/trunk pass-through offers immediate access to the trunk as well. Drivers say the 2004 Optima is comfortable and surprisingly quiet, even on the highway. Handling is smooth, and they love all the features you get for the low price tag. There have been issues with getting Kia dealers to honor the warranty. Other complaints focus on so-so gas mileage, the location of the cupholders, the underpowered I4, and some shudder during idling.

We, especially my wife, loves the smaller size of the Optima as compared to her old 1999 Buick Century. Although the ride was a bit smoother in the Buick (a plus for most mid size Buick sedans due to more weight) the Kia still holds it's own and seems to be quicker in cornering, accelerating, and stopping. Both vehicles were pretty close in accessories and amenities. However, the smaller Kia has a big advantage in parking and fuel consumption, which is to be expected. It is a pleasant change of pace!Jul 01, 2014

I dislike the automatic transmission, it takes away from the power of the motor. The car gets around thirty miles to the gallon, and generally runs on any type of gas. I is a fun driver and I drive it everyday to and from work. Aug 07, 2012

It is a small car, I have a family of 5 way to small with growing boys, great car if you like a small car. Nice gas mileage and price, not the deluxe package, but decent inside!!!! Cd player, power windows and locks.Feb 20, 2012
