Porsche added a number of new models to its 911 lineup for 2004, including convertible (cabriolet) versions of the Carrera 4S and the 911 Turbo, as well as a 40th Anniversary limited edition and a GT3 model that draws from Porsche's racing heritage. In addition, the GT2 model was equipped with larger brakes, a retuned suspension, and an upgraded engine with more horspower (up 21 horsepower from the previous year, to 477 hp). All Porsche 911s were rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive vehicles, and all seated four passengers (though admittedly the back seats were cramped) with the exception of the GT models, which were two-seaters. The standard 911 powerplant was a 3.6-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine that produced 315 horsepower, which was dropped under the hoods of the Carrera coupe and cabriolet, Carrera 4 cabriolet, Carrera 4S coupe and cabriolet, and the Targa, a convertible-like model with a retractable roof. The 40th Anniversary coupe was powered by a 345-horsepower six-cylinder engine, and came with dark gray leather seats, unique aluminum and silver metallic interior trim, chrome tailpipes, special 18-inch wheels, exterior air intake grilles, and a specially tuned suspension. The 911 Turbo coupe and cabriolet were equipped with either a turbocharged 415-horsepower, 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine, which was standard, or an optional 444-horsepower six-cylinder. The GT3 was powered by a 360-horsepower six-cylinder engine, while the racing-oriented, stripped-down GT2 blew out the competition with a turbocharged 3.6-liter six-cylinder that pumped out 477 horsepower. As expected with an exotic sports car of this caliber, the 911 came with a wide range of standard features, including four-wheel anti-lock brakes, dual front and side airbags, air conditioning, power brakes, power windows, power heated mirrors, lighted entry and anti-theft alarm systems, cruise control, leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and audio systems with CD. A six-speed manual transmission was standard across the line, while Porsche's five-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, with a special gate for manual shifting, was optional on all but the GT3 and GT2 models.

The IMS Bearing failures are killing the market. It may be overblown. Also water leaks in the engine add to the problems, Lastly two other arears: Turn signal failure and passenger window noises. The market appears to be $25K to 32K. That is totally unacceptable as an owner and seller. Porsche should have made efforts to correct the problems and not having court findings.Apr 12, 2024

The cars still have the older 911 feel, they are still small, though not as small as the 993 cars, and they weigh less than the newer cars. Take care of the IMS bearing or find one that has been fixed, or a higher milage car that has not had any issues. and for the most part, the 996 are fairly bullet proof. I have had other Porsche cars, A Cayenne, A Boxter S and now thie 996.2. All have been great, but there is something special about a 911....Sep 20, 2023

This is truly a perfect 10 and the last analog Porsche. The 996 really does combine everything top-notch from the air-cooled era and transforms it into a modern beast-mode-esk type of fun. The 996 Turbo is the perfect blend of the older more engaging driving experience mixed with modern safety, comfortable drivability and reliability. The newer 911s are too interrupted by technology to be raw drivers. Additionally, the newer, 2005 going forward, 911s dont offer as much pure feedback from the road.
The car is rocket ship in terms of power and although the design cues of the interior are very early 2000s, the material are of very high quality and gorgeous (minus the turn indicator and wiper stalk). Very much a performance 911. Highly recommended! Feb 02, 2021

This is a driving machine like no other. It will handle far better then any thing you have driving. However, family machine it is not. The trunk in the front of the car is OK, but your not going to even get two beach chairs and towels. Only consider as a 2nd car and driving in the winter can get expensive as the tires typically need to be changed out for rubber that will not freeze solid. Oct 31, 2020

Sold mine four years ago and have regretted it almost every day since. These are a great way to relieve stress. The drive is very analog and very involving if not stupid fast like so many cars today. You can actually explore more than 6/10s on public roads without risking life or a trip to jail! They are also a safe buy if you get a car with a good history and complete maintenance as they are at the bottom of the depreciation curve. This was my My 1st Porsche and certainly will not be my last.
Very reliable and fast.
Handles beautifully, tires last maybe, 20k miles.
996 headlights not my favorite, but the Motor is very strong and has a nice note.
I sold it for an E92 M3, it has more room and is still fun to drive.
A used 996 with less than 40k miles for around $35k is a great/fun first affordable Porsche.May 23, 2014

Noisy, loud, rough riding, low clearance, stiff clutch.
However, it is awesome. Great engine, it sings all the way to 8,200 rpm. Rugged transmission, tuned suspension for great handling. Massive front brakes. Overall great engineering. I know this car is not for everyone.Feb 21, 2014

Performance is very very good :) Handling and brakes are awesome. Looks gorgeous. I love it. Only had it a while so cant comment on reliability etc. The Tiptronic gearbox seems excellent. Came with a hard-top for the winter. Fuel consumption is better than I expected.May 28, 2012

I like my Porsche very much and would neve change it with a new one because the exterior style is much more prettier than the new one's.
My car with an added 30 PS (through a chip= 350 PS now) satisfies my desires regarding acceleration and top speed.
I have also changed the black col. to white with the wrapping system and

This car belonged to a friend who was driving it in the middle of winter with snow on the ground despite owning a Toyota landcruiser as he said it had better handling in the bad weather. I sat in and instantly felt comfotable all the controls were to hand as I drove it off he said 'floor it', very gingerly I did but wow what a sensation as the power fed in and suddenly I was breaking the law (in seconds) I was doing 100mph unfortunatly it was over all to quickly and I was back in my 1.4 Renault Megan. I drove this car at Thruxton - it is incredibly easy to get in and drive quickly on a track. With my limited talent, I probably went faster in this car than either the Ferrari F430 or Lamborghini LP640. Of the supercars I drove, this would also be the easiest to live with daily - I would happy (delirious) driving this around London. The handling, due to the 4WD, was very flattering and did not have any of the legendary 911 pendulum effect in evidence. Very quick, obviously, and with huge traction out of corners.Dec 29, 2008

experience is absolutely unequaled. The 911 is BUILT right. (It's a lot MORE than a driver's
car. I should know -as my winter ride is a BMW 335i.) Don't drive one unless you're prepared

It´s acceleration is unique, there´s no words for it. You only have to touch the accelerator and it´s like bending space and time, it´ll get you there in no time, the engine roars as only a Porsche can do it. Symbol oil can- Failure indicator on dash panel, happening more frequently generally in 70 to 80 mph and if take foot off accelerator and then depress gas pedal the pressure gauge responds but the length of time varies.
