Talk about your anticlimaxes. The Pontiac Firebird unceremoniously disappeared after 2002, representing the death of one of only two continuously produced models from the muscle car era. No grand sendoff party, no last rites, no memorial parade through the streets. Just a special edition 35th anniversary Trans Am car that featured the WS6 engine, performance wheels, and a bumblebee yellow with black trim design. Oh, and power windows, locks, and mirrors were now standard on all models. It's almost the equivalent of getting an unsentimental gold watch at retirement. Available as a coupe (base, Formula, or Trans Am) or convertible (base and Trans Am), the 2002 Firebird featured three engine choices. Base models had a 3.8-liter, 205-hp V6, plenty fast for the novice driver. The Formula and Trans Am came with a 5.7-liter, 310-hp V8, and the WS6 package on the Trans Am boosted the horsepower to 325. This was the true performance Firebird, one of the fastest on record, with dual exhaust pipes and nostril-like hood scoops for more aggressive bull-snorting action. Yes, the car once driven by a broad array of people ranging from Jim Rockford, Rocky Balboa, Dwight from The Office, Kevin Spacey in American Beauty, the Hoff in Knight Rider, and even beloved Apu from the Simpsons, the Pontiac Firebird crossed all boundaries of age and gender. It will be missed by several generations of sports car fans who loved its engine power, highway performance, race-car handling, and the cool cockpit feel of slipping behind the wheel. Though it suffered from cheap plastic parts that caused rattles and squeaks, an inconvenient rear spoiler that let water into the trunk, and most notably the unfit-for-human-use backseat, the Firebird served its main purpose admirably -- fun and sexy roadburner for the everyman.

Amazing Car! Ws6 is very rare, and very responsive. Their are plenty of faster cars, and cheaper. However, the experience you get driving, is second to none. You can spin a dead cat into traffic and a Mustang and Camaro. This last year of the Bird is gone but not forgotten. Aug 26, 2022

This car is very eye-catching. The sleek style always turns heads, especially when the top is down. It has lots of power and handles corners like a dream. it gets approximately 22-24 miles mpg highway and 15-18 city. My only dislikes would be how low it rides to the ground but that is a necessary evil. Also, in precipitation it can tend to fishtail.Mar 14, 2015

and at least with my version 188k miles, the reliability was an issue. The alternator went along with the pullies and the belts but in all fairness any car that is 13 years old and with nearly 200k of miles would probably need the same repairs.Jan 27, 2015

Buy it but make sure it hasn't been trashed by Dummies first! Great car safe with 4 disc's all around, track control, solid feel makes you feel safe driving it! Hatch is nice for big stuff. The car really looks cool! Nice exhaust sound! Handles well too! Red dash lights at night BMW style & red lights on the door controls nice! Has a lot of power for a V6. I love the flip up head lights!
Build quality: No noises on the interior, no blind spots, stays out of the shop, the gas mileage is good roughly 340 miles to 14 to 15 gallons of gas has a 16 gallon tank, maintenance and repair costs are fair.
Performance: Great acceleration, braking and handling are very good, I feel safe and in control driving it "be careful when rainning back end slides easy but TRAC-CONTROL helps alot & of course this car is fun to drive?Oct 23, 2014

I bought this car as a whim, but it is great in every way. Never had a Pontiac before, but have owned 338 different vehicle in my life, only 3 are great, this is one of them. Get one soon, OK?Feb 27, 2014

I love the look of the car. Its a very classy look and makes a really good noise even for a V6. Although its a V6 it still eats the gas but thats not a huge deal. There are some manufacturing issues that you may run into but nothing that isnt an easy fix althoug easy does not mean cheap in some cases. Easy to work on and most replacement parts are cheap since they were so common. Overall a good car that is fun and is really fun to drive in the summer with the t-tops off.Feb 05, 2013

The 2002 Trans Am Firebird is the last of a great American pastime, the muscle car. The 2002 models has power, luxery, looks and decent fuel mileage. I use the car for my daily commute, my weekends and driving it to the store is exciting. I could not be more pleased. I have upgraded the exhaust and the program, and although mine is an automatic, it will get after it!Nov 14, 2011

Nice car...Looks good but just needs some low end torque...Hoping someday I'll be able to drop an LSX in it and build it a bit...Gets lots of looks and haven't had many problems with it...First F-body I've had that stays at operating temp by itself...Aug 25, 2011

its a very good car, it has a pretty good build quality, the performance is surprisingly very good for a 6 cylinder, and cool thing is is that its pretty cheap to own and the gas milage is nothing to complain about... 24mpg Dec 08, 2010

Great acceleration/breaking/cornering, it never fails to turn heads, T-tops.
The interior is tight-fitting and the build quality and use of materials could be better. The interior is made up of hard cheap plastic bits, typical gm vintage of the era.
Car although has been very reliable, in part to a bulletproof 3800 series engine. In two years of ownership, I put in about $150 in minor repairs (oil, bulbs, battery terminal, spark plugs).
I would recommend this car to anyone avidly looking for a sportier alternative (but cost effective) to a mustang, celica, rsx, tc, etc. This car could be considered a sportier and flashier alternative to its platform mate, the infamous chevrolet camaro.
The only drawback is you'll be buying one used b/c gm fails to realize that there is a market for pontiacs and firebirds and having a pontiac was never a politically correct car to have. Mar 08, 2010

I'm in love with my car. It's not a v8, but we're madly
in love nevertheless. The only thing I'm not too crazy
about is replacing the headlights so constantly. Other
than that the car runs great, isn't so bad on gas, and
looks and drives great.Mar 04, 2010

This car was amazing. I bought it with 29,000 miles almost 4 years ago and just recently traded it in with just over 50,000 miles. It was ashame the economy has tanked, it would have been worth a lot more. It had it's issues but over all it never let me down and when I wanted to put the pedal down it never dissapointed. This car is fast and it looks beautiful doing it. VERY small interior, but i love the T-tops in the summer time. I should mention that i have only driven this car for maybe 5 minutes, but thats all it took to make me love it and hate it at the same time. Apr 05, 2008

Pretty much the same as a Trams Am with the exception of the firebreathing V-8 and Ram-Air Hood. T-top's give you the safety of a coupe but the fun of a convertible.Mar 30, 2008
o everytime I drive my car on the highway for about an hour the next day my engine will knock and the oil pressure gauge on my dash will shoot up and down until it goes to normal which my car will stop knocking. Never any oil pressure problem or knocks when driving in town, only the day after a high drive. The knock and oil pressure will only last about 5 min until it's good again.
The car was running good. I stopped and filled up with gas, it was still running good. I drove the car home killed it. I got up the next morning car sounded like a lifter was tapping, but i am not sure. Anybody have any clue or any suggestions.
Hi Everyone, The back story: I have a 2002 Pontiac Firebird base model V6 coupe which has an auto trans, ABS track control, & is a rear wheel drive car. I'm hearing a loud like rubbing sound coming I think from the rear of the car from starting out at 3 miles an hour to getting louder at freeway speeds like 65 & 75 miles an hour as I go faster it sounds more like a metallic metal whine sound. I just had new tires put on the car 1,200 mile ago & thought they might be the problem but went back to the tire store & turns out that the tires aren't rubbing & are in good shape? I just had the fluid changed in the trans & rear end & the car was looked at by a trusted mechanic and was fine before all this started but I have put like 1,200 miles on it since he looked the car over but just 500 miles ago this sound developed what could be this problem any ideas? Maybe wheel bearings/hub? Thanks ahead of time for your answer's.
