Launched one year before a major and long-overdue overhaul of the SL500, the 2002 model just didn't strike drivers as being much more than an expensive status symbol.
Sure, the car offered smooth drivetrains and advanced safety features, but in the end, it disappointed because it cost too much, it was built on an "ancient platform," and performance was perceived as lacking.
But it also may have more reliable than later models. The 2003 overhaul introduced a load of new technological advance which were prone to malfunction. The 2002 was also among the last SL500's to be mostly hand assembled, making it desirable among purists.

There were few changes to the SL600 in the 2002 model year. With a short selling season and plans to completely overhaul the vehicle in the 2003 model year, Mercedes-Benz decided to leave well enough alone.
The 2002 SL6000, however, is still a very impressive car. In 2001 the SL600 got features designed by AMG added to the standard package, including "aerodynamic" lower-body styling and new two-piece AMG wheels.
Other relatively new features included the TeleAid system added remote door unlocking, vehicle diagnostics, and alarm monitoring. The SL600 was powered by a 369-horsepower, V12 engine.
