Toyota introduced the Highlander in 2001. It was marketed to consumers who wanted a mid-sized SUV but who were probably not going to take it off-road. The Highlander is a car-based cross between a station wagon, a mini-van, and an SUV, designed more for shuttling the kids to soccer practice than traversing rough terrain. The interior offers a roomy feel, although it only seats five.
The 2001 Toyota Highlander came as a 2WD and a 4WD, each as a four-cylinder or a V6 engine. The four-cylinder engine has 2.4 liters and 155 horsepower. The V6 has 3.0 liters and 220 horsepower. Fuel economy is about 18/22 to 22/27, depending on the engine.

Great first car, will get you from 'A to B' easily and comfortably, great car for a high schooler, with good handling and easy to manage. Although when parked outside it traps the air and amplifies the temperature (ex: 85 out side the car = 115 inside the car). Brakes are a little worn, but that's only because it being an old car.
February 5, 2015Loved taking this car out for a little while. It may not accelerate as fast as you may want, but the safety and reliability on the 2001 Highlander are both GREAT! The Highlander is a wonderful car for a small commute to the store or maybe to a friends house. The seats are great and the visibility is great also. Love the 2001 Highlander.
May 25, 2013There are little quirks with this model that are slightly annoying, but I'm sure that they fixed them on subsequent models. The only thing I wish I had is the 3rd row seating.

April 2, 2008very good car, i love it. I just bought it to drive back and forth to and from work. Great fuel economy and good performance. The car is very fun to drive and i love having the 4 wheel drive.
