The 2001 Toyota Avalon comes in two trim levels, the XL and the more luxurious XLS. Both trims come standard with a 3.0-liter, 210 horsepower V6 engine. The XL is nicely equipped, including cruise control, antilock breaks, and a number of other comfort features. The XLS includes a few more niceties, like an upgraded sound system, alloy wheels, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Fuel efficiency is 21/29 mpg.
Drivers love the 2001 Avalon for its extremely comfortable ride and excellent handling. Many owners compare the Avalon to a luxury brand car like the Lexus. Drivers also like the wide array of available options and the spacious interior. Complaints are mostly trivial and/or cosmetic, with many finding the Avalon to have bland styling both inside and out.

Performance - fair, I did try a set of summer performance tires that helped immensely in corners. Build - Excellent, 188K miles and still going the same as day one. Appearance - bland Cost of Ownership - minimal Fun Factor - Boring, leans a fair amount in the corners, rear suspension with two adults in the rear seat bottoms out easily.
April 4, 2011I have just over 165,000 miles on this car. This is the BEST car I have ever owned. I've owned 4 cars prior, and I was trading them in at 85,000 miles; but not with this one! Oil change was always between 3,500 and 4,000 miles. I now use high mileage oil in the car. Continue to be very satisfied with the gas mileage--still get 28-29 mpg on the freeway.
September 16, 2009My wife drove this car for the first 100,000 miles, then I put over 140000 miles on it. I have to say that the car still drives as good with 247000 miles as it did with 100000 miles. Great on gas mileage for a mid size car with V6 engine. The only complaint I ever had with this car was when the O2 sensors went out and the price of those are $200 + a piece.

February 25, 2014I purchased it with 180000 miles. It does not use any oil and the transmission is very well designed. It was making much noise coming from the suspension. Slowly but surely I began eliminating them. Rear torsion bushings, Front torsion bushings, Quick Struts, Lower control arms, lubrication and tightening of cradle mounts. It is now quite as a church mouse. I bought it right so I could afford to put a bit of cash and elbow grease into it. Someone said that an Avalon is a car that is sort of an investment and not to be afraid of the expense of upkeep. The parts are not very expensive and it is a dream to drive. It gobbles up the bumps in the road making for a very smooth ride.
October 9, 2013I bought this with 90K in 2004. It has 168K now and has been almost no trouble. The bench front seat allows 6 passengers. Lots of room, dual zone temp control. The vehicle stability control is works well in when you need to steer around something in the road. 26 mpg. good power
November 2, 2012V6 has a little get up and go and the brakes aren't bad considering the weight of the car. Not a sport or even touring car, body roll is beyond belief. Car was abused far more than any car should, yet still rode nice and looked decent.
July 27, 2009Quick responsive acceleration, somewhat soft brake feel, suspension could be stiffer, so might put some Tokico's... Styling is kind of Jiichan-poi, but nice. Full leather with wood trim and JBL sounds, though I dunno what's up with that middle woofer. Think I'm going to off it and stick a 12" Alpine Type R for the mids and lows... Just wish it was RWD for this size... Good on gas for a V6, and maintenance is pretty easy. Changed rotors/pads, oil/air filters, basic maintenance easy to do. I think it'll be a lot more fun if the suspension was a little stiffer. Feels like I'm floating on the road sometimes... (not shot, just soft. takes potholes and bumps like a champ...)
