2000 Kia Sephia Preview summaryImage

With international input from Mazda (the engine), Lotus (the suspension) and its new partnership with Hyundai, the 2000 Kia Sephia offers itself up as an affordable roomy compact with a nice kick and great fuel economy -- on paper, it's a perfect combination for those seeking a budget ride. After a 1998 makeover, the 2000 Sephia gets few changes beyond more choices of fabric color. Coming in base and LS models, both feature the 125-hp, 1.8-liter DOHC I4 engine from Mazda, mated to a standard 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.

As the first car sold under the Kia nameplate in the U.S., the front-wheel drive Sephia has had a rough start, but earned popularity through word of mouth for its low price tag. Both the base and LS are minimally equipped, offering air conditioning only as an option. The LS features a tilt steering wheel, adjustable driver's cushion, a handy driver's footrest, power steering, and split-folding rear seats, none of which are standard in the base model. A Power Package exclusively for the LS adds power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, a security system and tachometer. A CD or cassette player is optional on both trims. Though both are equipped with dual front airbags, ABS brakes are only optional on the LS.

The 2000 Sephia does boast more head and legroom than many of its competitors, and owners agree that the interior is roomy and comfortable. Since the Sephia is geared towards cost-conscious drivers, the gas mileage, at around 24/32 mpg, is a welcome bonus. But there are constant complaints of numerous repair problems, particularly with the brakes and transmission. Poor customer service that does not honor the warranty is a disappointing feature. Other complaints mention the cheap plastic interior, an easily dented body, small backseat, and labored acceleration when the A/C is on.

For this price it is hard to find a reliable car like this. It is not the best looking car on the market, but it takes you wherever you want to. Fuel economy is great, extremely low maintenance costs. It has a new battery and a new radiator. Aug 12, 2012

Too small, but well worth mpg ratings and low cost to maintain. Easy to maintain, parts easy to get. Would like more options like cruise control, but low purchase price is well worth the car you get in return for the money.May 18, 2010

Is a pretty decent car overall. I just bought it for $500. It has 100k on it and runs good. Everything works good on it. It may need a cv axle at some point soon but otherwise it is a good little car. Sep 07, 2009
