Chevrolet introduced the Astro in 1985, placing a passenger van body on a truck frame. A powerful 4.3-liter, 6-cylinder engine allows towing of boats and other heavy toys. Its other claim to fame is its roomy seating capacity; most Astros can seat up to eight people comfortably, and if you remove two heavy seats, you can fit a lot of cargo.
The most notable change for the 1999 Chevrolet Astro is the redesigned AWD (all-wheel drive) system. On AWD models, the Astro operates in rear-wheel drive until sensors detect wheel
slippage. At that point, the transfer case immediately shifts power to the front wheels.
Other changes for the 1999 Chevy Astro include
improvements to the problematic transmission; overhead consoles now standard on the LS and LT models; and optional heated, reduced-glare side mirrors. Some changes were also made to the exterior, such as new paint colors and optional
running boards.
1999 Chevrolet Astro owners have mixed reviews about its reliability. Many say it's a versatile, reliable van; others point to breakdowns and poor quality control on everything from sticking accelerators to failed window motors. Many owners also wish there were a sliding door on the driver's side as well as the passengers' side.

Boxy and unattractive but roomy and great for
travel/long distance driving (accept when gas
price is high, like now). Can take a lot of
abuse such as family with kids and all of the
associated extra curricular activities (sports
event, camping, moving items ...).
I purchased this new and paid $22K for it. So
far it's still going strong @ 176K. Original
engine, power train, AC (no kidding!!).
Replaced water pump about 5 years ago, radiator
last year. Power windows went out just after 3
years on both sides. The repair cost $300/ea so
we decided to go w/o for the pass 7 years and
finally i replaced myself after fixing my other
Olds with same issue. Surprisingly it was easy
and cheap - $60 for both windows. I should had
checked it out on the net long ago on how to
replace it instead of wasting all these years
without it.Apr 30, 2011

160000 miles and looses no oil between changes, runs like a new car. The only repairs have been common age related items, waterpump and alternator.May 12, 2007
1999 Chevy AstroVan,138,000 miles, Check engine light is on (The comes on intermittenly), engine is sputtering when starting from a dead stop. Oil pressure is good. Engine is not overheating. Is this a vacuum problem? Is this a fuel in-line filter issue?
My 99 Astro is doing it again This Anti-theft security module is going to shit again. Does any one know some one who can fix these things or is there a way to eliminate it so it will run?
I have a 99 Astro ( 4.3 awd) it ran great before I replaced ignition switch, cylinder, and lock housing, now when I fire it up it runs for a few seconds and dies. Plugs, wires, distributor are a few months old, fuel pump works, fuel filer is brand new. Could it be the fuel injectors?
