1998 Audi A8 Preview summaryImage

The Audi A8 burst onto the scene with several firsts in the U.S. An aluminum-built frame, panels, suspension, and engine was the first of its kind in a retail sedan in the U.S. Making the car much lighter than comparable ones in its category, the A8 was able to achieve better handling and gas mileage. Another first was the offering of six airbags. The rear side impact ones were hidden in the seats rather than the doors.

The 1998 Audi A8 makes only a few changes, the most notable of which is a new 5-speed Tiptronic auto/manual transmission. A new glass sunroof replaces the previous aluminum sunroof. Base model A8s feature the 3.7, 230-hp V8, and the quattro AWD sedan features a 4.2, 300-hp V8. The aluminum structure and powerful engine combo adds a lot of kick and speed to this full-size sedan, giving the driver confidence while passing on the highway, climbing uphill, or tackling tough weather conditions. The interior is enormous, with plenty of legroom all around -- perfect for long family trips or impressing business clients. Typical Audi luxuries adorn the interior. A particular favorite is the solar sunroof option, which powers a ventilation fan that cools off the cabin while parked in the sun.

Quattro performance, increased power, and a quiet ride are all favorites of 1998 A8 owners. The sedan is a perfect combination of classic elegance and fun. While some feel the exterior is too plain and nondescript, others love its subtley and unpretentiousness. Drivers feel safe on the road, but also comfortable inside with the leather heated seats and space. Outrageous maintenance costs shock some owners, who complain about the A8's unreliability. Poor service from the dealers seems to be an Audi trademark. Small mirrors cause blind spots, and drivers still have gear-shifting problems with the Tiptronic.

This car makes a great daily driver... much different than driving the Rx7s, haha... nice and quiet, smooth ride, comfy interior... glad I bought it! It's great for my long highway ride to work every day! The gas mileage isn't the best considering it has a 4.2l v8, haha. The stock Bose stereo sounds greatAug 22, 2008

Only two things I dislike about the car. 1. the cup holder is too small and 2. GPS didn't come standard. Other than that the car is an amazing piece of German technology. It is a rocket. It has a classic look and the nice thing about it is you don't see Audi A8's every day.Jul 03, 2008

Power is what this car is all about. First off, nothing on this car is manual, even the headrests and seatbelt adjusters are power, somewhat ridiculous but cool at the same time. Rear heated seats, the steering wheel even moves to meet you when you start the car and moves away when the key is removed. Forget to close your windows all the way and already locked the doors? just walk away, it has motion sensors on the inside for the alarm! Double paned glass, Bose 6-disc changer, large sunroof, 4.2 V8 with a ton of power (300HP) and decent mileage 19-26mpg. The all-wheel drive is the best, it takes so much to ever get stuck, even when you want to slide you have to really try. It goes through deep snow, rain, ice like its nothing. Also it handles so smoothly, takes corners like a champ. All of that plus tiptronic tranny makes it so fun to drive.Mar 18, 2008
