1996 Mazda MX-5 Miata Reviews, Pricing & Specs
Write a review
The 1996 Mazda MX-5 Miata received a few tweaks to improve its emissions and enable it to meet federal side-impact standards, which were required for the 1997 model year vehicles. As a result, the '96 MX-5 Miata was slightly heavier and slightly more powerful than earlier editions, with its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 133 horsepower, up 5 horsepower. A five-speed manual was the standard transmission, while a four-speed automatic was optional. The MX-5 Miata was available in a Base model, as well as an upscale M Edition. Standard features for the Base model included a manually operated soft top, power brakes, a driver's-side airbag, remote fuel and trunk releases, and 14-inch wheels. Options included a removable hardtop, air conditioning, power windows, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum alloy wheels, and leather seats. The M Edition received such upgrades as air conditioning, power windows, anti-lock brakes, and leather seats, as well as special interior and exterior colors. Generally, drivers reported having very few problems with the MX-5 Miata, and noted that it was a fun car to drive, as well as a good value. Styling, build quality, and responsive handling were also cited as positive factors, while its lack of storage space was among the negatives.

1996 Mazda MX-5 Miata M-Edition
I asked a question several months ago about replacing the engine on my 1996 Mazda MX-5 Miata M-Edition- I was quoted by my mechanic $4000 approximately. I was asked if maintenance was regular, and yes oil changes every 3-4,000 miles, regular tune ups, etc. I have records for the years I owned the car. I purchased it with only 2,000 miles on it! Now I have to face the fact that replacing the engine is not the best option, I am hoping to sell to a collector. What price should I sell this beautiful car for? I would love to get $6000 but maybe I am aiming too high? What do you all recommend?
Engine shuts down at random when driving at 40/45 mph; hard to restart.
After engine shuts down at 40/45 mph, it is hard to restart but will restart in ~15/20 mins if left alone. Check engine light comes on but will clear in 3 or 4 cycles, then the problem resurfaces in 4 or 5 days. A new crank angle sensor was installed, because computer fault code indicated a bad sensor, but problem persists...??

My Mazda Miata 1996 needs new engine
My Mazda Miata 1996 after years of running great with no surprises suddenly died on me. My mechanic says the engine which has approximately 154000 miles on it needs to be replaced. He says it will cost me over $4000 to replace the engine. Do I need to find a new mechanic or is this the current cost of engine replacement?
