The 1992 Pontiac Grand Am gets a new platform design for its fourth generation, the N platform, shared with the Buick Sklyark and Chevy Corsica. A new engine and trim names also accompany the refreshed "swoopier" and longer body design.
Coming in either a base SE or GT coupe or sedan, the 1992 G6 had three engine choices. The SE came standard with a 2.3-liter, SOHC, 120-hp I4, while the GT's four-cylinder engine was a high-output DOHC Quad 4 that put out 180 hp. Both came standard with a five-speed manual or an optional three-speed automatic. With the automatic, the Quad 4 only got 160 hp. A new 3.3-liter, 160-hp V6 was an option for the GT, the first V6 in a Grand Am since 1987. Also new in 1992 was standard ABS and power locks across the line. The sportier GT also includes Rallye gauges and foglights, but neither trim comes with many standard features.
The 1992 Grand Am was longer, but didn't add anything to the interior room space. With seating for four, and fold-down rear seats to increase trunk capacity, the Grand Am's spaciousness was one of the high points for owners. They like its sporty handling and instant pickup, as well as the Quad 4's performance on the highway. The seats are comfortable, and most owners like the curvy style. On the negative side, the Quad 4 seems to encounter a lot of problems, causing multiple repair shop visits. Blown head gaskets are common. Low headroom for tall people and peeling paint on the exterior are also common complaints.

use for backup car .. 4cyl twin cam engine .. good for racing projets... fun to costomize it..
good for traveling to work and local area... low cost on gas.... this model cost aprox 500$.. used car ... poor light at night .. a lot rust issus in rear fender and inside trunk has suspension top plate supportNov 30, 2014

I've had this car for close to 2 years and I have loved the car since I first laid eyes on it. The styling is very aggressive looking. The car itself is a cheap, but reliable and a great every day driver.
I am only having two main issues:
First being the Instrument cluster seems to be a fairly known issue where the "Check Gauges" and "Check Oil" lights just love to flicker on and off whenever they feel like. Both are fine and this is simply a short.
Second being, the brakes (despite being ABS) seem to lock up when it rains or snows.
Overall, a great car and would only see trading this off for another newer Pontiac grand am.Jan 09, 2013

this car is known as "the grand pimping" my dad bought it for my sister for $1200 i
think he over payed it is in bad shape i think this is really a $800-900 car the power
steering in shot the coolant,leaks,the trim is falling off,the gauges are in all off a
little,the power locks dont work, the 12 volt outlet dosent work and it under-steers
on dangerously. good points? no body rot,it has the moast comfortable seats of
any car i have ever been in and the intiror is not worn down at all dispite the 138k

This was a decent looking, reasonably
economical car. Ride and handling were average,
but performance from the V6 was very good for

Performance - for a '92 sporty car, it did what it was suppose to do when you hit the gas and the brake. Even in the icey mornings of the winters in Seattle, it handled very well. Pontiac was one of those reliable names back then.Sep 23, 2009

I loved this car but the fact that it had a Quad 4 motor was horrible. I had it for one month to the day before the head gasket blew which Quad 4s are known for. Only way I'd buy another Grand Am is if it's a V6 motor.Feb 04, 2008
