can I change a 4 cil to 6 cil
I have a 1988 jeep wrangler 4 cilinder engine can I change the engine to a 6 cil with out having to change the transmission and it will perform engine and transmition good

The 1988 Jeep Wrangler comes equipped with two engines, for power or for normal driving: the 2.5 liter I4 with 121 hp or the 4.2 liter I6, a 177 hp machine. Like its predecessor, the 1988 Jeep Wrangler has two available transmissions, a 3 speed automatic, or a 5 speed manual. Also like the 1987, the 1988 has two doors and four wheel drive, a true SUV for the off-roading fan.
Complete with air conditioning and even (gasp!) a cassette player, the Jeep Wrangler has every comfort you could expect from a 1988 SUV. The second in the line of vehicles that lasted 20 years, the 1988 Jeep Wrangler continued the new tradition of an outstanding SUV. While the 1988s may not be in the greatest condition today, they helped to establish what would become a standard of the SUV world.

Loved it from the start especially when we pull it with our motor home no need for dolys not hard to pull since it is light weight , and sporty when we travel or explore off road, grear for older people.Jul 25, 2011

This Jeep is a nice ride however it needs alot of work. the inside is in pretty good shape and the outside condition is about average. needs a new fuel system and the 4wd doesnt work. other than that every thing is good shape and has been well mantained.Jun 06, 2011

bad performance on road, braking and handeling are just not good.
build quality is very good , after 23years : no rust founded !
appearce ; rough; and thats what we like about it
gas mileage is not good, but OK

Needed repairs a few times, mainly the rear wheel drive. Gas milage wasnt great. It was fun to drive at the time. First gear seemed to be very short and shifting gears was a bit of an annoyance, freeway driving really bugged meFeb 11, 2010

The most fun you can have on 4 wheels and register it for the street. No top AND removable doors means more open air than anything on the road other than motorcycles. Stone reliable, large aftermarket, the ORIGINAL. Too bad the Germans killed it. I think they're mad because the original jeep helped win WWII.Sep 15, 2008

I bought my jeep YJ in october of 2007. Excellent quality, for an 88 I've made few repairs. Handles alright, quick on the wheel. Ownership costs are quite high, as I get about 12 mpg. However, this is an amazing vehicle to drive! If you're looking for something great for offroading, a Jeep Wrangler is perfect, vs. a cherokee. Wranglers can get aorund tight spaces much better.Aug 25, 2008

Quality... built to get roughed up everything quaility or it will be replaced..
Appearance... not exactly a rolls royce but when its clean its can be pretty classy..
Cost.. Just Empty Every Pocket
Fun Factor.. this jeep is the funnest ever going with buddies to Moab..is the best.. fun but expensive

One of the best vehicles we ever owned. It was great to get out during a snow storm and drive and drive. It was also fun to put the back window up,roll the windows down, and cruise in the summer time. If you can only get one vehicle for fun, make it a Jeep ! Jun 11, 2008
