Awesome — The beast is quite a car. She has taken many long distance road trips and never really faltered once during them. as a daily driver, she is a little cost prohibitive, both in gas mileage and upkeep. She was built with the low power 5.0 V8 so she can get out of her own way, but barely, and she won't be taking on any Mustangs anytime soon. As for the fun factor, she kind of can go almost anywhere, from deep in the mountains on logging roads to snowy city streets, and rarely has much she can't handle. Lots of interior room for passengers, plus lots of trunk space for luggage, coupled also with the ride quality that nobody could ever deny, make her the ultimate long distance road trip car. The downside is gas mileage and maintenance costs. She is, after all, a 27 year old daily driver, therefore parts fail quite often. Overall, though, i wouldn't give her up for the world.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Safety and fun, roominess,

Cons: Gas mileage and age

Traymore — I have a 1978 Mercury Marquis 2 door hardtop which I took on vacation from the Pittsburgh area to Miami about 25 times. I once made the 1,100 mile trip in about 19 hours. On the highway as anywhere else its ride gives you the feeling of immense protection as well as a floating on air feel that eases the miles away. I received the ultimate compliment while leaving Key West on U.S. 1 North from a group of young people in a one ton foreign compact. They said "Man, you could make five of our cars out of yours." My Marquis doesn't have much mileage for its age, only 133,000 but it never required major engine work. I did install stainless steel dual exhausts about 20 years ago which gave it a slight boost in power. I've been traveling by air for the last several years and haven't used the Marquis all that much but it's ready on moments notice. All in all with body on frame construction and classic styling it's not a car I want to give up anytime soon.

Pros: solid, robust construction; cushiony, float on air ride; volumninous interior & trunk

Cons: plastic instrument panel; however we haven't seen metal ones since 1967

81 Colony Park Wagon — This car isn't really that fast, or very well built, but it has room for six, and holds everything you could ever want because it is a wagon. The suspension can only be described as boat-like, so it floats over any road imperfections, and still manages to not be completely incompetent around turns because of large sway bars. Mine is actually the 81 carb version, but it still starts every time, and all the accessories work. I really could not ask for a better yank tank, and tank it is at 15 mpg.

Pros: space, looks, ride

Cons: economy, speed (none), manuvereability (none)

Grandpa Car — this car was nice to drive in but wasn't for someone who was 20 years old at the time.

Pros: nice comfortable ride

Cons: wrong age group for me, under powered with its 302

What Might Have Been... — This formerly clean & beautiful '83 Grand Marquis was purchased in rural Carthage, Illinois. I saw her sitting on the side of the road with a For Sale sign in the front window. After owning a larger car I missed the road feel and roominess. This had a 302 V8 with a lazy AOD transmission that wanted to shift into overdrive at around 25 miles an hour. Other than that, everthing worked perfectly when I bought this including the "premium sound" stereo and A/C. All was well with the world...until I slammed into a 10 point buck on I-74 during the thanksgiving break of my freshman year of college. The radiator core support, front clip, and radiator were replaced by my Father and I over winter break. After that the car wasn't the same. That 302 ran like a champ though, and it would take ANYTHING that I threw at it and didn't even wince. I wish I hadn't hit that stupid animal

Pros: Solid motor, plush velour seats, great ride

Cons: AOD transmission sucked, deer killed it.
