The 1974 Dodge Charger has much of the styling and performance of the '73 car, but with a slightly sportier look. The redesigned grille and larger quarter-panel windows were added largely to comply with the regulations of the day.
The 1974 model year was the end of the third-generation Dodge Charger and really the end of the true muscle-car era. The Charger was for a while an icon to speed freaks everywhere, thanks in part to its popularity in the movies "Bullitt" and "The Fast and the Furious" and the television show "The Dukes of Hazzard."
Heading away from performance and toward luxury, the 1974 Dodge Charger dropped the Ralley trim package, though the 440 Magnum was still the top engine offered (now de-tuned to 275hp). The most popular trim was the SE with its standard 400cc block providing 260hp to the rear tires. It provided comfort and luxury and was a signal of this vehicle's future in an era of environmental and governmental regulations.
What owners say
"Owners of the 1974 Dodge Charger are thrilled with its impressive power and thrilling driving experience. Many appreciate its loud, muscular sound and unique style, which attract admiration from others. However, some drivers note its high fuel consumption and occasional need for repairs, particularly regarding the interior. Overall, it’s celebrated as a classic muscle car that still delivers excitement on the road."
Installed a 440 Police Interceptor. Black on black with a color change stripe. 5 spoke mags. Very Fast. This car would run at 120 mph all day. This car was the definition of a gas guzzler. This car took a lot of abuse.
February 13, 2010loud, mean looking and fast. One fo the best cars ever built!
February 7, 2008Very fun to drive. Nice loud and powerful 440. With the Brogham Edition interior in the SE model, it has power windows, AM/FM, factory sunroof, center console w/ a 727 automatic transmission. Yes, filling up a 20 gallon tank gets expensive, but you get a lot of joy out of each gallon. I've had this car for over 12 years now, and I don't know if I could ever part with it.

May 3, 2008I was asked to take a drive in a friends 1974 Dodge Charger. This car was incredible. He has all sorts of modifications that he's added over the year. It literally feels like a rocket ship taking off when he floors it off the line. I absolutely love how it drove and can't wait for him to ask me again ... assuming he will.
September 22, 2007Awesome car its black and has many performance parts and has good acceleration braking and handlingit needs some repairs the interior is bad for now and needs some work but over all its a good car to drive and fun to drift with.
September 18, 2009Didn't have a ton of power with a 318 and a/c but it was decent.Handled great with 60 series tires on the rear and 70s on the front.Air shocks got the rear up.Hedman headers ,Thrush glass packs, and a true dual exhaust made it sound awesome, especially once the packs burned out.Traded it for a 84 Shelby Charger in 84.
March 20, 2008You are wrong. The 74 Charger Rallye was indeed available. I have one. The 74 did not have the black hood treatment. AS well.horsepower was 270.
May 7, 2023yep its a blast from the past thats for sure! the 318 does an good job gettin it down the road its not bad for a stock 2 barrel. but as usual its just not enuff. so i wanna go bigger cubes!
