Buy One And Drive The Heck Out Of It! — This is the best car I've ever owned. Most all of the parts are still available new from BMW. Numerous owner clubs and parts sites as well.Lots of used parts available too, with a little internet searching. It is one of the most economical-to-drive and own as any car I have had. With a good shop manual, anyone with even just mild mechanical ability can maintain and repair it. Braking is excellent because of nice sized discs up front. Factory performance is good even by today's standards. Handling is better than most new sport sedans; it feels like a go kart. Very forgiving and predictable when being driven at the limit because of its neutral handling. Want tail-happy? Just mash the go pedal in a hard, fast turn. The car has a power to weight ratio on par with most current high-performance sedans. Weight is just over 2000 pounds and with about $500 in mods it will produce 140-150 hp. The car was designed to be a competitive racing machine and during its heyday it dominated the sports sedan classes. I've modded mine to about 140 hp and it still gets about 25 mpg. Easy to work on and the build quality is excellent, and after 35 years it is as solid and squeak-free as when it left the factory. Its styling gets you noticed and gets compliments everywhere you go. A driver's car in its purest form, I challenge you to find another car that is as much fun to drive. It begs to, and is built for, being driven hard. If you want an old car that has a high, high coolness factor, this is it. I will never sell mine!

    Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Perfprmance, parts availability, ease of maintenance

    Cons: none

2002 — The car was great but unfortunately it didnĀ“t run that long. So the fun factor the car surely had, was not very long for me. This was due to the age of the car at the time as i bought it.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: look and feel of the past time

    Cons: gas mileage!!!!!!!

1974 Bmw 2002 — The classic mean 2002... I got this car for free* * I had to get a ride to VA to go pick it up... I had to stop every 30 miles and add gear oil to it (usually 2 wheels on a curb and me under it soaking my elbows in that lovely smell of gear oil) the thing was leaking mad ! I wound up rebuliding the trans and topend of motor, some electrical work a new ANSA exhaust and my free car was now a $2000 investment with much hard late work and bruised bloody knuckles It was definately a cool car to drive, it caugh on fire one day in NYC, during the puerto Rican day parade ! the FD cam roaring through the parade as I burned in Times Square ! Oh and I also got a parking ticket while burning !!! good times, i'd get another one if the price is right one day...

    Pros: killer look, small wheelbase

    Cons: bad seats

Cult Classic — Formerly a 100 BHP 2002 carb, upgraded to mechanical fuel injection, pushing out 130 BHP. It was destined to be a classic from the first day of production. Next upgrade would be to dump in a 5 speed gearbox. It's a BMW 2002tii. a Cult Classic. Need i say more?

    Pros: A Cult Classic

Cons: comes with a 4-speed gearbox, which should be upgraded to a 5-speed

They Don't Call It The Whispering Bomb For Nothing. — This is my first car and still excites me everytime I drive it. I have spent the last 6 years getting into tip top shape. It is quick enough to make it very fun, and sometimes a little dangerous. It can cruise at 100 mph all day long. After my interior retrofit is done it will be as comfortable as a new car too!

Pros: Nothing more fun to drive ever made ... period.

Cons: Very prone to rust.  Do not drive it in the winter!  Stock front seats suck.

Absolutely Hilarious To Drive And You Gotta Stay Alert, Or You Die — will surprise any little civic rice boy out there who thinks its some old german car that doesnt have any power, but surprise, surprise, it has power! and it weighs almost nothing so its damn fast and the handling is remarkable. RWD FTW!!

Pros: really quick and surprising for a 33 year old car

    Cons: interior is bad

The Bmw 2002tii — I owned 4 2002's in succession - three regular carb versions from 74 and 76 and the above 1974 2002tii - featuring both a sunroof and a/c, which was extremely rare. These cars are a blast to drive with exceptional handling and sound. They make great daily drivers but you need a good mechanic who knows the cars, and you must be vigilant with the maintenance. The above example was my daily driver for several years. Today in 2013 - the value of this car would be close to $30k as prices have skyrocketed in the last few years. If you are looking for a 2002, check for rust in FOUR locations: The spare tire well, the shock towers, the wheel wells and the front passenger floor. Avoid the 1975 version if possible as they were prone to a slew of issues - go for the 74 or 76. The tii was only imported until 1974 ( for pollution reasons ). The three rarest options were sunroof, a/c and the tii-specific alloy wheels.

    Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: The 1974 BMW 2002tii was the best of the 2002's imported through 1976; The tii was avilable through 1974 and was BMW's first fuel-injected car in the US.

Cons: Less durable than you'd think. Maintenance was quite frequent.
