The coupe or convertible 1968 Pontiac Firebird may have shared a platform and some body panels with the Camaro, but it was slowly carving out its own niche in the muscle car segment. Changes for 1968 include the disappearance of the side vent windows, and new wraparound turn signal lights and Pontiac V marker lights in the rear. A new suspension included staggered shocks and multi-leaf rear springs. Changes to the instrument panel, a new anti-theft button, and an optional 4-way power seat were also new for 1968.
For its second year on the market, the 1968 Firebird updated its engines for more pony car performance or just personal fun behind the wheel. The base engine was now a 250 I6, with a new single-barrel carb that got 175-hp. The Sprint remained a 230-block at 215-hp. The V8s got some minor horsepower upgrades, but also a wider variety of options. The old 326 was now a 350 V8 that got 265-hp with a 2-barrel carb or 320-hp with a 4-barrel carb. The 400 V8 came in a wide palate of options. The four-barrel carb base engine rated 330-hp, but a High Output version upped that to 335-hp. There was also a High Output engine with Ram Air option, that didn't boost the horsepower, but reached its peak performance at a higher RPM. Midyear, this would be replaced by a Ram Air II that did increase the horsepower to 340-hp.
The 400 V8s came with heavy duty parts and stiffer suspension for maximum street racing handling. But for average drivers looking for a little kick behind the wheel, the Sprint I6 produced an adequately satisfying sporty feel.

What can I say? This is a clasic muscle car whose styling is still current (IMHO). It is a piece of history and is a ball to drive. And unlike the Camaro's of the same generation not everybody has one! Oct 19, 2010

This is clearly a project car, so to judge it on overall performance and appearance would be unfair, but I will say this. For a 42 year old car, it still drive swell. As far as build quality, this car was kept a lot better than most of its age have, and it has not yet been restored. Only real body work that has been done to it was it received a new (but terrible) paint job in the mid 70's. Body is straight and solid.Aug 06, 2010

The very first car I ever owned was a 1968 Pontiac Firebird. That car drove me through my high school years, through 10 years in the Army and well into my marriage and first few children. In 1994 I made the tough decision to sell my beloved Firebird in order to purchase my first home. From the moment I watched that car being driven away I regretted my choice, but life carried on. Over the years I searched in vain, trying to relocate my old 'bird so I could buy it back, but to no avail. Then, a few weeks ago my wife found and bought me a 1968 Firebird that could easily be the spitting image of the car I drove around throughout the last few years of my childhood and into early adulthood. Now I find that I am in love with a car all over again!
***Performance-Excellent for an older car
***Build Quality-Decent but it can't compare to today's well built cars
***Appearance-Incredible and Timeless
***Cost of Ownership/Gas Mileage-Common, it's a classic with a huge V-8! You do not buy one of these cars for their gas mileage!
***Fun Factor-Off the charts!!!!!Feb 09, 2010

I wish I still owned this car, I bought it when I was 16
years old and drove it for 3 years. It was a great
looking car- white convertible with blue interior. It
was a fun car to drive, I loved feeling the wind in my
hair and the sun on my face.Aug 17, 2008

Sheryl's car. She was very kind (crazy?) to let me learn to drive in this very very coool car.
It was beautiful to look at. It kind of floated up at the front like a big boat and I was probably too short to be driving it. Oh, it was lovely. Aug 01, 2008

Its a 1968 Firebird 350 H.O, but I am going to restore and modify it to a upgraded and modernized 400 model. I want it be a sort of classic looking but high tech car. Like a Pro-Touring CarMay 27, 2008

1968 pontiac firebird orginally a 350 now has a 66 389 tri power engineMar 16, 2008
Well, I got this when i graduated from college with every intention of performing a complete restoration. Unfortunately due to work, going back to school and a lack of funds, progress has been, how should I say, SLOW!!!
I do have the engine and transmission removed, as well as having some body work done and the car has since been repainted (to solar red, an original Firebird color, just not THIS Firebird's original color - the blue wasn't original either). I've also ripped out all of the interior but need to replace the floor pans in the front before I continue.
As I said, it's a work in progress, but one I hope to have completed this decade (or soon thereafter!).Feb 12, 2008

It'll take a while to give a good reviewDec 30, 2007
I'm looking at possibly buying a 1968 firebird but want to check the authenticity of the car (VIN and Cowl tag). VIN - 223378L104637 Cowl tag - there is the following stamped above the BODY, what does that mean? E435
My 1968 Firebird came (to me) with a 4 barrel carburetor that had been removed and installed was a Edelbrock. I would like to find out if this makes it a H.O or if someone possibly added the 4 barrel later. Are there any numbers on the block or somewhere else that can tell me for sure if it is in fact an H.O? Thanks in advance.
Trying to find a new water pump - online search - can't seem to find one for 6cyl... anyone know really good place to search ? OHC straight6 (250ci), 1bbl carburetor, rated at 175bhp part # = (I think) OE 97884280
Car started last weekend with new battery after sitting for a couple of years. Today it is turning over like a champ but will not start. Does not smell flooded. Anu ideas what could have gone wrong? Any ideas of things to check?
68 firebird with a 350 Chevy engine and 350 Chevy transmission. They were rebuild 10 years ago I drive the car about 100 miles per year max. Custom interior sound system with bluetooth, wheels 15x10 runs strong, I'm just looking to work in a different project.
