Toyota Highlander History

Years ago, the Toyota Highlander stood alone at a new SUV frontier.  Toyota had created a unique sport utility, combining a car-like ride with SUV flexibility and convenience.  The arrival of the Highlander signified the birth of the crossover SUV.  Lexus introduced the similar RX 300 at about the same time, and competitors for both having been steadily springing up ever since.  While the Highlander is priced to compete with offerings like the Ford Edge, Honda Pilot, Mazda CX series, and Mitsubishi Endeavor, it has the exclusive standing as the original.
Toyota builds the Highlander up from the Toyota Camry platform, which leads to  sedan-like handling and very reasonable gas mileage.  All wheel drive and a potent V-6 engine have always been Highlander options.  For 2007, the Highlander is available in both gas-powered and hybrid models, with three trim levels.  The hybrid is not offered with the Sport trim.
The regular Highlander begins with with a base level trim which includes features like air conditioning, keyless entry, power windows/mirrors/locks, and a six speaker CD audio system.  Sport is the middle tier trim which adds a more athletic appearance.  This version adds 17 inch wheels, chrome exterior trim, fog lamps, and a special grille. Highland Sports with 4WD also receive a sport-tuned suspension.  The Highlander Limited aims for Lexus-like presentation, incorporating wood trim, automatic climate control, a premium JBL audio system, and heated mirrors.  The third row of seating is standard on the Limited.  Leather seats, a DVD entertainment system, and an in-dash CD changer are available add-ons for all trims.  The Limited also offers a navigation system option.
All highlander models are offered with both 2WD and AWD drive trains, and two engine choices.  The first power plant is a 2.4 liter DOHC inline four, which generates 155 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque.  A 3.3 liter V-6 is also available, bumping horsepower up to 215 and torque to 222 pound-feet.  Neither engine offers an abundance of pulling power, but fuel efficiency is quite strong for an SUV.  The four cylinder Highlander has an EPA rating of 22/28 mpg with 2WD.  The AWD six cylinder version is the least efficient, at 18/24 mpg.
