Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my 2004 mercury mountain tailgate won'y open.  It has a key button on my remoye that I push and it buzzes but doesnlt open.  It opened this morning just fine, but when I closed it after shopping, it won;t open.  Any suggestions as to how to fix it othar than taking it to Ford.  They want $149.00 to diagnose it and no telling what the cost would be to fix it.

Try opening it by the manual release on the door (and not use the FOB). You may have accidentally jammed something in it when you closed it after shopping.

I don't think there is a manual release on the door. there is a handle that opens the entire tailgate, but I don't see one that only opens the upper part like the fob does. Normally, it just pops a little and you reach under it and lift it. Where would the manual handle be?

There is a button to the right of the license plate that will open the window portion of the tailgate, but it does the same as the button on the fob. It only buzzes but won't open the window. What to do now??

The button on the tailgate only opens the window, just like the fob button is supposed to do. The unlock button on the fob should release the lock that opens the tailgate but, as you know, it just unlocks all doors when pushed twice. you still have to pull up on the release mounted in the tailgate. Sorry, I have no other idea short of taking it to a shop.
