If you are hearing a loud electric motor noise when you crank the engine and nothing else, then it is your starter. A starter has 2 parts, 1 called the solenoid (moves the starter gear into contact with the engine flywheel) and 2 the motor itself. When the solenoid goes bad the motor spins but is not in contact with the engine to get it to turn over. You can replace the solenoid (normally part of the starter assembly, so you have to buy the whole thing and replace the starter along with it) Or the old mechanic trick is to bang on the starter and solenoid to free it up so it can move the gears into contact. This sometimes works and isn't really a fix, just a band-aid.
