2016 Subaru Outback needs 2 catalytic conversters replaced?

Asked by Joebloux Jun 29, 2022 at 12:37 PM about the 2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2016 Subaru Outback with the Eyesight.  It has 58K miles on it, and
so far, has been in pretty good shape.  I was just told by the mechanic that I
need to have both catalytic converters replaced and it will cost me about $3k.
Is this correct?  The mechanic says Subaru's are known to have issues with
the catalytic converter.

Without the check engine light on or driveability problems, I wouldn't buy that story! Especially with only 58,000 miles on it!! If the converters are really bad, something is going on with the engine to have killed them! Also, check your warranty booklet. In some parts of the Country the catalytic converter is covered by the factory warranty for 8 years or 80, 000 miles. Whichever comes first. Irregardless if you're the original owner! Take it to your local Subaru Dealer and see what they tell you. Hope that helps! Jim

If there was no check engine light I really doubt that you have catalyst problems. With mileage that low and if your concerned then I would go to the dealer to have it checked.

Thanks everyone - the check engine light was on, and the Eyesight shut off by itself. I did contact Subaru - if it is the catalytic converters, they are covered under warranty so I am bringing it to the dealer Tuesday. In the meantime, should I drive it?

Awesome! Thanks for the update!! Yes, you can drive it as long as you're not having any drivability problems (flashing check engine light, lack of power, etc.). Jim

Yes it can be driven but if the check engine starts to flash or turns on then take it home and don’t drive it until your appointment. Doing so could cause it to go into limp in mode and then you would have a speed restriction of about 25 mph.
