No crank no start with a burning smell under the hood

Asked by Shamroc21 Dec 11, 2017 at 06:55 PM about the 2012 Volkswagen CC 2.0T Sport FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Came home from work car was just fine. Came out the next
day and the car was misfiring and sputtering very bad.
Tried to take it to the shop to have it tuned up but the car
cut off a block from the house and has not started since...
when I push the key fob in no crank no start dash board
light flash rapidly. And there's a burning smell under the
hood. Has anyone had this problem or know what causes
it?

Clearly you have a major malfunction, so nothing about it will be 'typical,' like that caused by a part nearing the end of its service life. Most likely you had a short, it most likely won't be hard to find given the severity of your description. First thing to di is remove the battery, hopefully it wasn't shorted and ruined. You can check the battery and other wiring harnesses visually but you'll want to use a multimeter to check the rest thoroughly.

In these situations i prefer to follow my nose. Find the spot the smell is the worest and you will find your trouble area. alternativly look for signs of burnt or melted plastic or wires.
