Check engine and cruise lights

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an '08 Outback. Today I experienced a fright
as I was attempting to merge with interstate traffic.
My engine revved but would not accelerate and
kind of chugged back to the speed I was previously
at. I noticed that my check engine light was on and
my cruise light was flashing. I don't recall hitting
the cruise button but tried to cancel it so I could
get up to speed. The revving and chugging
happened twice more before I could finally
accelerate. I don't have any codes, but was
wondering if you would have any insights for me?
Additionally it has been a sunny day with
temperature a reaching 90 degrees. It was near
2pm during the occurrence.  Thank you!

It happened again only this time I was at interstate speeds when it began to rev, choke back, flutter and began loosing speed. I was able to get off at the nearest exit and that was all. I got a tow to a mechanic where I found out the third cylinder had lost all compression and my engine was truly dead.
