2007 Chrysler Town & Country Overheating

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Leaking coolant, replaced upper
radiator hose. Still leaking, replaced
radiator, lower hose, thermostat,
flushed coolant, bled air. No leaks but
now quickly overheats & usually blows
cold air but blows warm air
occasionally. Ran several times with
front end jacked all the way up and
radiator cap off til bubbles stopped and
topped off and replaced radiator cap.
Still overheats unless I idle while
driving (otherwise temperature gauge
quickly climbs to red/warning chime
sounds). Upper radiator hose is hot,
thermostat works (tested in pot of hot
water),  no leaks, no apparent air
pockets - next step water pump
replacement.
Could it be an easier fix? Hate to waste
new coolant, plus it's bitterly cold out!

Sounds like you have been working this a while. Is there any evidence of coolant or steam from the exhaust? Either the cooling system isn't completely full or you might have an internal leak. Have you tried an pressure test of the cooling system? This can sometime provide additional information on where the trouble may be.

It has been leaking slightly for a couple months. I tried a couple "radiator leak stop" products, but no positive results. I flushed the coolant when replacing the radiator, but still see some copper particles in the coolant. I will flush again with distilled water when I replace the water pump just in case that residue might cause issues.

I also parked facing slightly uphill, jacked up the front of the minivan as much as possible, and ran with the radiator cap off several times. I ran it until the engine was hot and the coolant was starting to overflow. Haven't seen bubbles in several tries. Fairly confident the system is full/purged.

I stopped by the auto parts store before work and bought a replacement water pump and two more gallon jugs of the fancy coolant this vehicle uses, and will attempt replacement on Sunday (my day off).

Doesn't leak coolant. I check it when cold before every start. No steam, hoses are well-pressurized when engine and temperature gauge on dash are hot. Lower heater core hose for cabin gets hot, but upper heater core hose, immediately above lower heater core hose, only gets warm. Lower radiator hose is cold.
