Timing belt on car with "low mileage" for age of car.

Asked by Jean Dec 06, 2019 at 05:00 PM about the 2005 Volvo S40 2.4i

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 S40 with low mileage (73,000). It was recommended I do the
timing belt now since it is over 12 years old instead of waiting on the mileage.
Thoughts?

More important is whether it's an interference motor . ie. when the belt breaks the piston may slam into the valves ruining the motor , If it's not one of those I guess you can wait till it breaks , or replace it when some other work that allows access to the timing belt is done ..

Vehicle maintenance is done by mileage OR time intervals, whichever comes first. So let's say an oil change is due every 5 months OR 5,000 miles but at the end of the 5 months you've only driven 2,000 miles. You still need the oil change at the 5 month mark. On the other hand if after 3 months you've already driven the 5,000 miles. Then you need the oil change at the 5,000 mile mark. Same thing is true for the timing belt or any other vehicle maintenance. Since you're past the time interval, you should replace the timing belt now. The timing belt is made of rubber and will deteriorate over time. Even if it's not used much. Hope that helps! Jim

There is probably an inspection port where the belt can be checked for cracks or missing teeth. You do know a new engine is a LOT more expensive than keeping up with the maintenance?
