The Check Engine Light is on. Auto Parts Store Check says that it is the Catalytic Converter. Visual Check shows a crack in exhaust pipe BEFORE the Catalytic Converter (car is also louder than it should be). Is it possible for a leak in the exhaust to cause the computer to think the Catalytic Converter is bad when it isn't?

Yes, I would agree that the crack can interfere. A good mechanic would Mig weld that and save money. Muffler shop would love to unload your wallet and replace everything five feet in both directions. Just say "No".
