Selling a 2005 Subaru outback with it dead engine

Asked by angvaf Jul 11, 2018 at 10:10 AM about the 2005 Subaru Outback 2.5 XT Wagon

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I have come into a 2005 Subaru outback recently
with a seized up engine, and in need of brakes and
rotors everything else about the car is really great
the interior is well-kept  it recently got new tires and
struts installed, and a new windshield. Unfortunately
due to my busy schedule I am on able to work on
the car and I’m looking to sell it, I would like all of
your honest opinion and how much you think the
car is potentially worth

Blue book value is around 2,500 for an average condition car with 90K miles. Being as yours requires a few thousand in repairs, I'd say you would be lucky to get more than a grand for it (based mainly on being a decent chassis with good interior and tires). You could part it out and make couple thousand off it, but that may take one or more years to get rid of it all. Visit any of these sites to get the car's "blue book" valuation: edmunds.com/, nadaguides.com/, and kelleybluebook.com/. You can also check "sold" listings on Ebay, and Craiglist listings will show comparable prices in your area. Being a project car will greatly reduce car's value of course, and it's really impossible to give a "project car" price guideline as they are all different.

Angvaf, 2005 was a weird year for Outbacks, as they were mongrels of the 2000-2004 and 2006-2009 eras, sharing theolder motor and the newer emissions system. To get that to work required a convoluted exhaust system using FIVE O2 sensors that fought with each other to confuse diagnoses when CELs flashed! Really annoying. I learned to skip the '05 and go directly from the '04 to the '06. Be careful.
