www.jdmenginedepotinc.com These are take out engines from Japan between 45 and 65 thousand miles on them. I bought one from them and so far I have no complaints. guaranteed also.

Japanese engines may not be smog legal in the states!

LKQ networks many boneyards. When you find one ask re provenance, warranty, and proceed. The trick is to get a 2006-2009 motor that already has new head gaskets, and is therefore “dry”. But if it’s a low price you can then send the heads to a machine shop to test, and then replace HGs, t-belt and pulleys. (Water pump and t-stat are likely to be fine.) Good luck.

JDM guarantees these engines to meet US Smog standards. That was my first question to them also. One note though my technician had to change sensors over from my old engine to the newer one from Japan, seems as though the Japanese sensors couldn't talk to the American computer. BTW mine passed State inspection right after the engine swap. Also at an average mileage of 55,000 miles you still have about 45,000 mile before Subaru recommends replacing the head gaskets .You also have a year warranty before you even really get started on that mileage quest. I also understand the logic of changing the head gaskets to the sandwich style gasket when you have the engine out , but my technician argued against it using that logic. PS he is the shop owner who would profit greatly from having changed the gaskets now , and he has 35 years experience working on Subaru's.

Who the hell "recommends" replacing HGs at 100k?! That's nonsense. The decision criteria include whether the as-found HGs are wet...or indeed the original design. If so, then spending about $160 to have a machine shop clean and test the heads, about $200 for a full HG "kit", and a couple of hours labor ($200) is money extremely well spent BEFORE the motor's installed. If the heads are dry, AND the gaskets are the three-ply, then you should take the gamble that the system is solid and ready for durable use. Be careful.
