had airbags repaired on 2004 jeep grand cherokee and now the 2wd to 4wd shifter is broken.

Does the jeep mechanics need to open the center console to repair airbags?

I did reads that the SRS module is usually located in the trans tunnel, so if module was replaced along with new airbags then it is possible that the factory mechanic messed it up.
