Even though a manual transmission was and option in 1984 corvette, did Chevrolet ever build one for the public?

Asked by jhdaugh Jul 04, 2014 at 04:07 AM about the 1984 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe RWD

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I sold quite a few corvettes in 1984, but I recall ordering a 1984 stick shift and Chevrolet offered to build a 1985 for my customer.

Chevy was a weird company- you could order a car any way you wanted if you had the cash- the weird 7 speed semi auto is all I know about- but maybe some other guru knows about this- what I do know- those '84s were junk, first model year, ya know and the C4 didn't get all that much better- you can pick one up cheap and put whatever drive train you want in it- and change it to real gauges while you are at it- if you are asking because you are wondering if they will be collectible, forget it- C4s will never be worth much-

If I remember, only automatic transmissions were offered in the first year production run. I may be wrong, but I'm relying on a fading memory. I agree with the above statement about the 84s issues. It was a first year production and it was rushed. There were a lot of issues not corrected until the 85s came out. As far as value? If you have a crystal ball that you trust, ask it. Old car values and prices are finicky. Any Corvette is fun. Older ones have issues, as do all things used. As things break, parts are replaced with more reliable ones. For a lot of expense, you can drop in a stick shift transmission, but look at the cost vs. buying a 85 or above for the same price difference.

I guess my memory isn't that good. Out of 51,500 production Corvettes made in 1984, only 12% or 4100 had manual transmissions. Only 6000 were sold in California. Thanks Nh for doing the research and not a 69 year old memory bank.
