when I pull a 21 ft trailer, the engine whine is outrageous. I've never heard so many tones coming from an engine. Is this normal?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This whine happens while pulling on long up hill climbs when it kicks into gear.  Whether it is in drive or third gear...the engine whine is the same. Doesn't seem right.

are the transmission coolant lines kinked or otherwise crushed or obstructed? perhaps the transmission is overheating is all I'm suggesting here...The engine may also have a have a stretched timing chain or old timing belt with a weak tensioner~

You may just be hearing the cooling fan lock in high speed due to the increased load.

Watch the tach. If over 4,000 whines are normal.
